All Government is Local | Eastern North Carolina Now

For elected Beaufort County Democrats: Not so much.

I am often reminded of this - the government is local part - by my most ardent constituents, the great patriots that care more about the direction their nation, and less about their status in the community. They often consider me their poor intercessor to a government gone mad on the corruptible power of control from the top, where facsism may breed its contemptable seed.

My constituents prefer their government, where they can put out their collective hand, and touch those that make the decisions that may well matter in their lives.

Remarkably, Beaufort County's elected Democrats are obviously not called on by their constituents to be close to the public on some issues, at least not ones that call into question the sorry condition the federal government has boldly embraced, including the probable destruction of our constitution, in pieces, as Liberals strive to placate the popular whim of the day to gain votes - always the votes of their "low-information" electorate.

That proved to be the case Friday afternoon, when the Beaufort County Commissioners met to decide upon the passage of a resolution to petition their county government and state government to refuse certain federal initiatives, if forced into law, that will weaken the strength of America's foremost document - the United States Constitution - which, in time, will hasten the demise of this Republic.

As the four county commissioners, who hold themselves out to be Republicans, met to consider the standing up to the impending federal government, should it choose to weaken the U.S. Constitution by executive order or legislative law, three Beaufort County Commissioners, who hold themselves out to be Democrat, did not. They made no statement as to why they did not show up to represent their constituents, and since they were not there, they offered no debate as to why this defiant resolution was good or bad for the people of Beaufort County. Their resolve to show no resolve spoke volumes as to why they, and supposedly their constituents, just do not care about our constitution - the one these Democrat politicians are sworn to uphold and defend.

And while this commissioner's blather may seem most dramatic in commentary, the sound and fury of the possible truth unknown, but near certain revealed, is a poor future indeed for us all - the active patriots and the unproductive consumers alike. That truth revealed is that we live in a nation, where a majority of dunderheaded politicians put their prospects for re-election well ahead of the fiscal well being of the Republic, and let America's former economic might turn fallow under the ominous weight of a poorly informed, and overly pampered electorate, kept as to perform like organ-grinder-monkeys each election, and as the chaotic strains of organ melody drones on, they vote their pay on the dole, and they vote again and again and do as they are told to do so.

Winston Churchill was known to humorously remind his English countrymen that, "Americans can always be counted on to do the right thing ... once they have exhausted all other options."

While this back-handed compliment might have been partially true then, I just wonder if our collective future did portend that necessity to do so: Could we count on ourselves to do just that - "do the right thing" - in a pinch?

Right now the one certainty that I can reasonably promote: That pinch of bad times ahead is drawing nigh, irrespective whether the majority of Democrat politicians, including Beaufort County's 3 "no-shows" - Commissioners: Jerry Langley, Ed Booth and Robert Belcher wish to admit it now, or understand its destructive promise later.

On Friday afternoon, as the Beaufort County Commissioners, in attendance, made their lone cry in America's present day political wilderness, I was very encouraged by the response of a thoughtful public, who did show up for this hastily called special meeting, and, moreover, to manifest that they well understand the challenges that face our nation, and that they will stand with politicians who are prepared to meet those challenges. To all of these 70 or more folks who filled our lobby, and our meeting room, made much smaller by their presence, you are large in your patriotism to understand the obvious, and to care enough to take your time to stand and be counted. I have long understood who my constituents truly are, and I am humbled to count you among them.

I have long held the belief that good politicians know who their constituents are, and that good politicians are made better by the quality of their constituents. This perfect blend of the public, and the public servant, makes for a better Republic, one that could continue, irrespective of the storm clouds ahead, gathered just beyond on our future American the horizon.

All good government is truly local. I have always known this, and that maxim was reinforced for me on Friday afternoon, at 3:00 pm, in Beaufort County. It's just too bad, in fact rather sad, that the three Democrat Commissioners, who failed to just show up to be counted, will never truly know this one truth.

Below is a video of the entire, but very short meeting:
