    Chapel Hill, N.C.     Last week, the UNC College Republicans received a 75% funding cut from their student congress for seemingly no reason. The group requested $8,000 to bring two speakers to campus: Katie Pavlich, a New York Times number one best seller and editor of Townhall.com and Ann McElhinny the co-producer of the movie FrackNation and previous documentary Mine Your Own Business. Last year, the group received over $12,000 for speakers and this year received $3,000.

    Yet, anarchist group, UNControllables, and feminist group, Siren Magazine received more funding and less cuts than the College Republicans. UNControllables were allocated $4,005 and Siren Magazine was allocated $5,157.

    Townhall.com posted an article Friday with an image from the UNC Student Government website outlining the groups that received funding from the Finance Committee meeting Tuesday.

    UNC’s College Republicans Chairman, Peter McClelland said, “They had a lot of groups to fund and didn’t feel comfortable funding College Republicans. Yet, they funded an anarchist group and liberal women’s group more. So combined, between $9,000 to $10,000 for the far left.”

    Nate Pencook, Chairman of the North Carolina Federation of College Republicans said, “UNC Student Congress’s decision to cut funding for UNC College Republicans is regrettable. College Republicans too often find themselves a target of liberal academia. However, College Republicans exist to provide balance and intellectual diversity. It is extremely disappointing that the UNC Student Congress decided to stifle opposing views, and we look forward to their vote on Tuesday to remedy the situation.”

    The UNC student congress will look into the UNC College Republican's appeal on Tuesday, September 3rd at 7:00pm. The UNC College Republicans have organized a protest ahead of tomorrow's meeting.
