Right triumphs as left tanks in key German local elections | Eastern North Carolina Now

both traditional and populist right gain seats and vote share as left loses ground

ENCNow

Both traditional and populist parties of the right gained ground in local elections in the state of Thuringia while parties of the left lost ground.  These elections were for local government seats and are an indicator for coming state and EU elections,.

The biggest gainer was the populist nationalist anti-immigration right Alternaiv fur Deutschland (AfD) which captured 26.4%, up from 17.7% from the last round of these elections.  The biggest loser was the Left Party, which is currently lead party in the Thuringia state government, and is the successor to the old East German Communist Party, which fell from 14% to 8.4%.

Overall, the traditional conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU), which recently officially discarded the Merkel policy positions and moved to the right, came out on top with 27.6% of the vote, up from 27.3% in the last round. AfD was second with their 26.4%

The three parties in the current national government "traffic light" coalition, the Social Democrats, Greens, and Free Democrats, together receive only 17.6%, far behind either of the parties of the right individually and only a third of what they received together.

The three parties of the current left of center Thuringia state government, the Left Party, Social Democrats, and Greens together polled 23.3%, again significantly less than either of the parties of the right did individually.

While these totals show the right is doing very well, and the left not well at all, several factors in the state election would push that even more in that direction.  One is that to win seats in the state parliament, a party must win at least 5% of the vote, and the Greens and Free Democrats are well below that and so will probably crash out of the state parliament altogether.  Also, there are more indedpendent candidates running in local than state elections, and those candidates tend to be center-right to right.

The most significant difference, however, is that a new populist nationalist anti-immigration party of the left, the BSW is likely to be taking much of the Left Party's vote as well as some of the Social Democrat vote.  BSW ran only a handful of candidates in these elections because it is concentrating on the state and EU elections.  BSW is led by the former floor leader of the Left Party in the Bundestag (federal parliament), Sahra Wagenkrecht,  who broke with the Left Party after being sidelined for her outspoken opposition to illegal immigration and the green agenda.  While her economic views are of the traditional socialist variety, she is also eurosceptic and anti-globalist.

Thuringia was cobbled together from a patchwork of Duchies, Grand Duchies, and Prinicipalities at the start of the Weimar Republic, when it became known as "Red Thuringia" for its propensity to vote for parties of the left.  Clearly that is changing fast.

This comes as national governing coalition party politicians call for jail time for a group of young people who did a video in a beach bar that went viral singing "Germany for the Germans, Foreigners Out!"  These lefty politicians want to criminalize this political statement, while ignoring all of the violent crime committed by the illegal alien migrants.  In contrast, when a group of  Muslim migrant men recently put out a video which said " We want HItler back.  We want to gas the Jews.", this was shown on TV with their faces blurred to protect them and nothing was done.
