European conservatives win again as Croatia moves further right in election | Eastern North Carolina Now

populist / nationalist / sovereigntist right are kingmakers for new government

ENCNow

Croatia is the latest European country to see a surge by the right, particularly the populist / nationalist / sovereigntist right in their election.   Among the largest groupings, the governing traditional right Croatian Democratic Union was top votegetter with 61 of parliament's 151 seats, followed by the center-left coalition with 42 seats.  In third place was the populist / nationalist anti-immigration Homeland Movement, which rocketed from 2 seats in the last parliament to 14 in this election.  The staunchly conservative Croatian Sovereigntist Party took fourth place with 11 seats.  The Homeland Movement declared in its campaign that the only coalition partners it would find unacceptable were the Green Party and a Serb minority party.   It is expected that the Croatian Democratic Union and the Homeland Movement will be the core of the new coalition, which could then either take in the Croatian Sovereigntist Party or one of the small non-Serbian minority parties.
