Right keeps strong lead for key German state election in Saxony | Eastern North Carolina Now

Both populist and traditional right still gaining and dominate others

ENCNow

In Imperial Germany and Weimar Germany, the state of Saxony was known as "Red Saxony" due to its propensity to vote for parties of the left, but that is clearly no longer true as polls show the September, 2024 state election there will be dominated by parties of the right, which continue to expand their lead.  Both populist and traditional conservatives are running extremely strong, and that in spite of continued vicious media and government attacks on the populist right AfD.

The latest poll, conducted by the German polling firm INSA for the Bild newspaper puts the populist / nationalist anti-immigration right Alternative fur Deutschland in the lead at 34% with the traditional conservative CDU second at 30%.  The only other party in double digits, is the new populist left anti-globalist BSW which opposes both "green" climate policies and illegal immigration at 11%.

Meanwhile the three parties in the left-liberal national coalition government poll only 13% COMBINED (Social Democrats 6%, Green Party 5%, Free Democrats 2%). The far left Left Party is at 5% and the populist / nationalist right Free Voters are at 3%.  Under German election law, a party must get five percent of the vote to win any seats so all of these parties are on the knife edge of being totally eliminated from parliament.

Many suggest that a right - left populist coalition of AfD and BSW is a likely outcome, given the CDU's national party position of not working with the AfD.  Both AfD and BSW make opposition to illegal immigration major issues for their parties and both also agree that the "green" climate policies are hurting the German people.  Both are also euroskeptic and anti-globalist.

What is particularly encouraging in this poll is that voters on the left are also swinging behind an anti-immigration party and rejecting the globalist parties of the establishment.
