    Alice Mae Alligood Monroe, age 67, a resident of Chesapeake, Virginia, passed away Thursday, April 25, 2013.

    Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, April 28, 2013 at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington, NC and will be officiated by Rev. Barbara Chaffee. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Ryan Monroe, Josh Culler, Ashley Alligood, Glenn Bowen, Jeremy Hill and Matthew Bryson will serve as pallbearers.

    Mrs. Monroe was born on March 12, 1946 in Beaufort County. Her parents were the late Frederick Marvin Alligood and Eva Mae Alligood Singleton. Mrs. Monroe graduated from Washington High School in 1964. She attended St. Andrews for two years and then transferred to East Carolina University, where she graduated in 1969. She began her teaching career in Norfolk, Virginia, after graduation. On November 30, 1974 she married Harold J. Monroe, Jr., her husband of 38 years.

    Over a period of 31 years she taught in several schools, including Norview High School in Virginia and Northeastern High School in North Carolina until her retirement in 2000.

    In addition to being a music teacher, Mrs. Monroe was an organist and choir director for many churches during her life including Asbury United Methodist Church and St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Washington, NC, Lafayette Presbyterian Church in Norfolk, VA, St. Christopher's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, VA and Corinth Baptist Church in Elizabeth City, NC.

    She is survived by her husband, Harold J. Monroe, Jr. of Chesapeake, VA; a son, Ryan J. Monroe of Chesapeake, VA; a daughter, Mary "Lauren" Culler and husband Josh, three grandchildren, Kyla Culler, Dillon Culler, and Leah Culler of Middleburg, FL; a brother, Fred M. Alligood, Jr. and wife Mary of Midlothian, VA; a sister, Pat A. Hill and husband Edward of Washington, NC; two nieces and three nephews. Mrs. Monroe is also survived by a stepbrother, Graham Singleton of Garner, NC and a stepsister, Judy Bethard of Mt. Carmel, TN. She was predeceased by her stepfather, John Singleton and stepsister, Mona J. Woolard.

    In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Asbury United Methodist Church Music Fund, 88 N. Asbury Church Rd., Washington, NC 27889 or to the American Diabetes Association, 2418 Blue Ridge Rd., Suite 206, Raleigh, NC 27607.

    The family wishes to express special thanks to Jean Brown and Patsy Brite who remained faithful friends until the end.
