Smoke from Canada's wildfires caused US solar power production to plunge over 50% | Eastern North Carolina Now

Solar does not work during thick smoke

ENCNow

Thick smoke has blanketed the Northeast United States in a dense orange haze that has led to air quality warnings. Another issue from the smoke is that it significantly lowered solar power production by over 50% in the United States.

Solar farms powering New England were generating 56% less power during periods of maximum demand than they did the previous week, according to the region's grid operator.

Smoke is just one of many things that degrade solar power and make it intermittant and unrelible. Some, like nightfall, happen daily. Others like clouds, fog, snow, frost, dew, etc. happen quite often, too. Only kneejerk climate alarmist ideologues would promote solar power for grid baseload. It leads to blackouts, brownouts, and skyrpcketing power bills. And some of the worst times for solar power to crap out are the times that electricity is most in demand like cold snaps. The same is true of wind power which has a tendency to fall off in particularly cold and hot periods, when electricity is most needed. Europe has also shown that months-long "wind droughts" happen that cause wind power to fall off severely for months.
