New conservative coalition governments being organized in Finland & Berlin | Eastern North Carolina Now

as result of recent election victories by the right

ENCNow

Coalition governments led by conservatives are being organized in Finland and in the German state of Berlin after recent conservative election victories.  Both involve coalition discussions.  In the case of Berlin, it will be that state's first conservative-led government in twenty years.

In Finland, the traditional conservative National Coalition Party ran first, with the populist / nationalist anti-immigration Finns Party a close second.  The National Coalition Party was given the first chance to form a government, and they have announced a four party coalition, consisting of the National Coalition Party, the Finns Party, and two smaller right-leaning parties.  Strong anti-immigration policies are expected as this is the key issue for the Finns and one that the National Coalition also agrees on.  So is pushing nuclear power instead of wind and solar.  Building more nuclear power is a big issue with the National Coalition Party and one that the Finns agree on.

In Berlin the center-right Christian Democrats ran first, but forming a coaltiion was messy.  The populist / nationalist right would not provide enough votes to put them over the line for a majority, so they formed a coaltion with the center-left Social Democrats as its junior partner.  This moves state government rightward, as the outgoing coalition was the Left Party, the Greens, and the Social Democrats.

Berlin's election was a court-ordered re-run of their previous election, which the Constitutional Court had thrown out due to election fraud and ordered a new election.  With honest elections, the right won a historic victory.
