Americans can expect to wait months, possibly as far out as next year, for President Joe Biden to begin his re-election campaign in earnest, according to a new report.

NBC News's Peter Alexander, who recently conducted a rare interview with Biden, reported on Sunday hearing from sources close to the president who anticipate he will follow "the Obama model."

Former President Barack Obama, under whom Biden served as vice president, announced his re-election campaign in April 2011 but did not officially begin holding events until May 2012 before he won a second term.

"Obama went 13 months after the announcement to start campaigning," Alexander said during an appearance on "Meet the Press." Biden, he added, "could make an announcement in April and wait until next year to get on the trail."

Biden says he intends to run for re-election, but has yet to make it official. More than two years into his presidency, Biden faces an average disapproval rating above 50% and questions about his mental acuity

But Alexander claimed Biden was able to "check off a couple key boxes" in recent weeks. After a routine physical last week, his doctor claimed Biden "remains a healthy, vigorous 80-year-old male who is fit to successfully execute the duties of the Presidency." And Biden's State of the Union address was well received by many Democrats, he said.

Competition on the Republican side of the 2024 fray is growing, as Nikki Haley, the former governor of South Carolina and one-time United Nations ambassador, announced Tuesday that she will run for president. Former President Donald Trump is also running, potentially setting up a 2020 rematch for the next general election.
