In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, actress/comedian Lily Tomlin, 82, offered her opinion as to why the war between Ukraine and Russia has galvanized so much news coverage, contending, "As tragic as Ukraine is, you think of it as a white European country."

Tomlin continued, "I think of the people in Haiti and in all the countries of color where terrible things happened and not as many people responded, and it was not as widely spread in the press. There was just an embrace of the Ukrainian people and a dismissal of people of color in other countries."

Tomlin, whose close friendship with noted leftist actress Jane Fonda goes back decades, was asked, "What is the secret to your working partnership (and friendship) with Fonda?" She answered, "We both have the same work ethic and we genuinely love each other, even though we come from such different backgrounds. I know she has my back, and I know I have hers. And I'm of course interested in all her political activities."

In September 2017 at the Emmys, Tomlin said of President Trump, "And in 2017, we still refuse to be controlled by a sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot."

As for Fonda, The Hollywood Reporter wrote in 2017:

Almost 45 years after she climbed into the seat of a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun vehicle and smiled for photographers, Jane Fonda, now 79, still finds herself targeted by U.S. military veterans.

The actress and activist, who took to the L.A. streets for the Women's March to protest Donald Trump's policies, already was one of Hollywood's most outspoken opponents of the Vietnam War when, at 34, she made a two-week trip to Hanoi in July 1972. By then, more than 60,000 U.S. soldiers had lost their lives in the conflict; Vietnamese casualties were close to 1 million.

In October 2020, speaking of the coronavirus COVID-19, actress Jane Fonda, an inveterate opponent of President Trump and promoter of presidential candidate Joe Biden, crowed that the virus "ripped the Band-Aid off who he (Trump) is and what he stands for," shrieking, "What a great gift! What a tremendous opportunity! ... COVID is God's gift to the Left."

Fonda's rant began, "We can stop fascism. We are at a point where we can - this is a crossroads. It's an existential crossroads. And we are people who can help determine which way humanity goes."

Fonda shrieked, "What a great gift! What a tremendous opportunity! We're just so lucky! We have to use it with every ounce of intelligence and courage and wherewithal we have, because you're absolutely right."

"This is it," she continued. "This is it. I just think COVID is God's gift to the Left," she chuckled.

"It's a terrible thing to say; I mean, I think it was a very difficult thing to send down to us, but it has ripped the Band-Aid off who he is and what he stands for and what is being done to average people and working people in this country," Fonda stated. "We can see it now; people who couldn't see it before, they see it now, and we have a chance to harness that anger and make a difference. So I feel so blessed to be alive right now."
