A girl at an elementary school in Las Vegas, Nevada, arrived to class with a note from her mother that would lead police to a terrifying discovery.

A teacher reported the note to police around 8 a.m. Tuesday morning, and Clark County School District Police were alerted to the girl's note, which said her mother was being held at home against her will and that her 4-year-old little brother was missing. The school police contacted the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD), who immediately began an investigation, KSNV reported.

"That note indicated that the mom was being held against her will," Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Lt. Ray Spencer told reporters, according to NBC News. "She also stated that she did not know the whereabouts of her preschool-aged child."

Police officers began surveilling the home and "observed a Hispanic male in his late 30s and a female leaving the residence around 10:00 a.m.," the outlet reported. The pair entered a vehicle and drove away, but were stopped by police a short time later, who detained the man and interviewed the woman.

Brandon Toseland, 35, was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree kidnapping, but added a murder charge later. He is not the father of the two children.

The woman turned out to be the mother of the girl with the note. She told police she hadn't seen her other child since December 11 and that she had been abused by the man now in police custody, who wouldn't let her leave the house alone or enter the garage. The woman told police she worried her young son may be dead.

"During the course of that interview, she described that she had undergone abuse by her boyfriend, who she lived with, and had been inquiring about the whereabouts of her child and believed that the child may possibly be deceased," Spencer told reporters

Homicide detectives obtained a warrant and started searching the home. When they searched the garage, they discovered the body of the 4-year-old boy in a freezer. KSNV reported that investigators "believe the child has been deceased since early December."

"We have a lot of questions that we still don't have the answer to," Spencer said.

NBC reported that Toseland has at least one previous arrest in Las Vegas. He was arrested for alleged possession of a dangerous weapon on December 27, 2008, after police found metal knuckles in his car. The Reno Gazette-Journal added that Toseland "has a history of arrests in Las Vegas dating back to at least 2005 on charges including domestic battery and disorderly conduct."

Toseland made his first appearance in Las Vegas Justice Court on Wednesday, where the kidnapping charges were presented. A murder charge was added later that day, NBC reported. Toseland was denied bail and ordered to remain in custody until his next court appearance, which is on Monday, February 28.
