Mother's Day, 2012: Lynn's Still the Best | Eastern North Carolina Now

No, she is not my mother, but she is the mother of my four children, and takes fine care of me, so a huge thank-you to the mother that keeps the Deatherages held fast, Lynn you're still the best.

Lynn is the girl, I wish I had met in high school, or earlier in my life. Like my version of Emily Webb, the sweet tragic figure from Thornton Wilder's "Our Town," but unlike Emily, Lynn survives and becomes the best mother, and wife any young man could hope for. Lynn would have been my Emily, if we had met as adolescents, and she would have been the one girl, who could have corralled my carousing nature, and kept me straight and true. The attraction was just too great, and even though I met Lynn just before my 22nd birthday, I have always wondered what if I had been her George Gibbs ("Our Town" reference again), and how would that have changed my life, and hers.

Fortunately for our four children, we did eventually meet, and they were born from our love, our strong attraction, and ultimately, they did benefit immeasurably from having the most loving mother any children could ever have.

So this day is for you Lynn - Mother's Day, 2012. You have my cheers, my adulation, my forever love, and my "George Gibbs" devotion to the one girl that salvaged this shaggy haired boy from his rock 'n' roll lifestyle, and gave him some direction, some lovely children to help raise, and a future.

Lynn, you are my best friend, the prettiest girl I ever know'd, and the sweetest mother any four children could have ever been born to. Your life has been a supreme benefit to all whom love you, and I pray you are sustained for decades hence to cherish and adore.

Thank-you for everything, and for every moment - good and bad. It is the sum of our past, and the beginning to our future. I will always love you.

Publisher's Note: We will publish any comments (including a picture) by our readership today, and for the rest of May, regarding their love for their mothers, living or deceased, or as is in my case: A husband's wife, who act as a mother to his children.

I'm not sure anyone would want to follow that! You really have a way with words you know and I must say that I feel most humbled.
