    John A. Zawitosky, born in Richmond Valley, Staten Island, passed away peacefully on September 22, 2019 while residing in Chocowinity, N.C. John was a longtime resident of Pleasant Plains, S.I., until moving to Chocowinity in 2002.

    John proudly served in the U.S. Army, and was a Veteran of the Korean War. Upon discharge from the Army, He became a NYC Firefighter and had a distinguished 28 year career, retiring as the Captain of Ladder Co. 161 in Coney Island, Brooklyn, NY.

    John was an avid boater, as a member of both Richmond County and Great Kills Yacht Clubs. He enjoyed skiing, golfing, and riding one of his 2 Harley Davidsons.

    John is survived by his wife, Betty, married over 50 years. Also survived by his daughter Sandy, his son John, and 4 grandchildren.

    Family and Friends are invited to a memorial service at 11 am on Saturday, October 5, at Washington Funeral & Cremation Hillside Chapel, 4500 US HWY 264 East, Washington, N.C., 27889. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10-11 am.

    In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the NYC Firefighters Burn Center or the Chocowinity Fire Dept., 512 NC Highway 33E, Chocowinity, N.C., 27817
