Publisher's Note: As we head into early / one stop voting, which begins on Thursday, April 19, 2012, I have elected to break with my tradition of not endorsing specific candidates in the Republican primary, and this year, I will endorse certain Republican candidates over other Republicans seeking their party's nomination.

You might ask: Why now Stan, when you really haven't followed this practice in the past?

The truthful answer: It is a two fold one. First, and for obvious reasons, this year is the most important election in decades, we better get it right. Second, and many who have a clarion view as I do will understand this, the distinctions between many of the candidates are remarkably clear, which makes this quite easy.

With all this proffered by me, and hopefully understood by you, I begin this exercise by endorsing my long time friend Greg Dority for North Carolina State Auditor. Why Greg? Read here below:

The North Carolina State Auditor, while a little known position to many voters, is an important constitutional office in the state. Charged with being a watchdog for the citizens of North Carolina to act independently in protecting their interests, the State Auditor plays a critical role in protecting freedom and liberty for the people. For the first time in recent memory there is a Republican primary for State Auditor and one candidate stands out among the field. He is former Beaufort County GOP Chairman Greg Dority and Beaufort County Now is proud to endorse him for this slot.

A 1981 graduate of North Carolina State University holding a B.A. degree in Political Science, Dority has extensive work experience in Washington, DC and abroad. He has investigative experience in overseas war zones such as Bosnia and Kosovo and is fearless in uncovering the facts. His solid conservative credentials go back to 1978 when he served as a student volunteer for Senator Helms' first re-election bid. In the last decade he has carried the GOP mantle on both sides of the state in very difficult congressional races in both the First and the 12th Districts, setting vote percentage records in each. He is a skilled and veteran campaigner that adds conservative votes to everyone on the ticket - a fact not overlooked by GOP activists around the state that have rallied to his campaign.

Four others are on the ballot. Rudy Wright and Fern Shubert are CPAs and have the technical skills to handle the position. While both have served in public office, they may find the role of independent investigator for the people a bit of a challenge. However, for those who do not select Dority, both Wright and Shubert offer somewhat competent alternatives.

The other two candidates are Joseph Debragga and Debra Goldman and each suffer from serious flaws. Debragga lacks sufficient gravitas to be seriously considered to lead the agency as his experience is perhaps best suited for line auditor in a mid-level entity. Goldman touts her experience on the Wake County School Board but her flip-flop to the liberal diversity plan there destroyed any credibility she might have ever enjoyed. Other factors speak strongly against her candidacy.

With the primary on the horizon, voters will find themselves soon with many choices in unfamiliar races. The conservative Republican voter can select Greg Dority for NC State Auditor with confidence and resolve. He is the man for the job.
