Beaufort Co. Press Release #1 Hurricane Dorian | Eastern North Carolina Now

Press Release:

    Publisher's note: We will provide all Hurricane Dorian reports and press releases as long as Beaufort County and eastern North Carolina is in danger, and while there is the immediate and essential cleanup. You can find all Hurricane Dorian posts here.

Storm Update:

    We are expecting Hurricane Dorian to impact Beaufort County with hurricane force winds. Tropical force winds will begin as early as Thursday evening with winds peaking late Thursday night through Friday evening. Storm surge for our rivers is expected to be between 3' - 5' above ground level with widespread flash flooding across the region. Total rainfall for area is projected to be 5" - 10" with some eastern areas of the county experiencing up to 15". In addition, there is a light tornado threat for our county through the event.

    Evacuation:

    Beaufort County has now declared a voluntary evacuation of all flood prone and low-lying areas of the county. Please make plans to evacuate these areas no later than noon on Thursday.

    Shelter:

    Beaufort County will open a shelter at Washington High School beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 4, 2019. Please remember, to bring necessities for several days stay.

    Transportation to the Shelter:

    Beaufort County will be providing transportation to the Washington shelter from various parts of the county according to the following information:

    • Thursday 9/5/2019 10:00 a.m. departure time
    • Thursday 9/5/2019 12:00 p.m. departure time
  • Aurora Fire Department
    • Thursday 9/5/2019 10:00 a.m. departure time

  • Blount's Creek Fire Department
    • Thursday 9/5/2019 10:30 a.m. departure time
    • Thursday 9/5/2019 12:30 p.m. departure time
  • Chocowinity Food Lion Parking Lot
    • Thursday 9/5/2019 11:00 a.m. departure time
    • Thursday 9/5/2019 1:00 p.m. departure time

    Special Transportation Needs:

    If you have mobility issues and need special transportation assistance, please contact Beaufort Area Transit System (BATS) at (252) 946-5778. We urge you not to delay in scheduling this transportation. Please make arrangements before Thursday morning at 8:00 a.m. with BATS.

    Animals for Shelter Attendees:

    Animals other than service animals are not allowed at the shelter nor on bus transportation. Shelter attendees with no other arrangement for animals may check their animal into the Beaufort County Animal Shelter. You must have a verification form provided by shelter staff to check your animal into the Beaufort County Animal Shelter.

    Please remember that Hurricane Dorian is a serious threat to our community. Please take every action available to keep yourself and your family safe.

    County Office Schedule:

    Beaufort County Offices will be closing at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday September 5, 2019 and will remain closed through Friday September 6, 2019.

North Carolina's Rate Bureau has requested for 2024 an annual increase of 42.2%, whereby North Carolina's Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey has exhibited a great willingness to take a firm stand against such an exorbitant increase.
The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services today released a draft of its 2024-25 Olmstead Plan designed to assist people with disabilities to reside in and experience the full benefit of inclusive communities.
Members of the North Carolina Rural Health Association (NCRHA) visited Washington, D.C., on Feb. 14, 2024, to meet with elected officials and advocate for policies to improve access to care in rural areas.
I reckon one could always argue that ignorance rests in the eyes of the beholder, but, I'm not taking that bet ... not in these Orwellian times, when so few of our fellow travelers know so little of what is real, and far too much of what otherwise might be terminally fake.
There were numerous local professional and educational opportunities showcased on Wednesday at the Beaufort County Job and Resource Fair.

This morning’s update included very minor changes to timing of today’s forecasted impacts.
This afternoon’s update from the National Weather Service (NWS) included another increase in the forecasted wind conditions for Beaufort County.
