Cunningham's New York City Cash Signals Schumer Primary Meddling

Press Release:

Last week, Erica Smith pledged her loyalty to a California socialist agenda when Kamala Harris visited North Carolina. This week, a new report from Real Clear Politics exposes Cal Cunningham isn't far behind her with New York liberals funding his North Carolina's Senate bid:

  • "During the second fundraising quarter, just before he entered the contest, Cunningham received $152,000 from New York donors -- nearly 35% of his itemized contributions for that period, according to federal election records...
  • "None of the donors had given to Cunningham during his failed 2010 Senate campaign, fueling talk that a promise of financial help from national Democrats may have helped sway the candidate to switch gears and jump into the Senate race after spending the first part of the year running for lieutenant governor."

This wouldn't be the first time national Democrats tried to meddle in North Carolina on Cal's behalf. Before he lost his 2010 primary to Elaine Marshall, the DSCC had already directed over tens of thousands of dollars his way. And reports about the DSCC's endorsement this cycle have been swirling since just days after Cunningham abandoned his lieutenant governor campaign for the U.S. Senate race.

"Chuck Schumer and his New York liberal donors want to buy this Senate seat away from the people of North Carolina," NRSC spokesperson Joanna Rodriguez said. "Unfortunately for Cunningham and the liberal special interests funding him, this campaign will end just like his others did — in a loss."
