Beaufort County Sheriff's: Warning Regarding Scam Phone Calls

Press Release:

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office would like to make the public aware of a recent incident involving a citizen who received a phone call from a scammer posing as a Deputy using the name of a currently serving Deputy with this office in hopes of appearing legitimate.

In this attempt, the scammer knew the intended victim's name and address and stated he had a warrant for their arrest for failing to appear in federal court for grand jury. The scammer then wanted the person to pay a monetary fine by credit card over the phone. Fortunately, the person recognized this as a scam and did not cooperate.

Scams of this type have occurred in other counties using similar stories such as the following:

  • There is a warrant for your arrest because you did not pay your taxes or debts. The scammer will threaten arrest, unless you pay over the phone immediately with a debit or credit card.
  • Your child/grandchild is in trouble and needs money immediately or they will go to jail.

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office wants you to know we will never call you asking for money.

If you are contacted by any Law Enforcement Agency attempting this type of scam we request you hang up the phone and call the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office immediately at 252-946-7111 or your local Law Enforcement Agency.
