Wake County Republican Party Announces Press Conference to Defend Wake County Seniors

Press Release:

RALEIGH — The Wake County Republican Party will hold a press conference on Monday, July 1st from 11am to 11:30am at the Wake County Justice Center located at 301 McDowell St. (Nash Square Entrance) in downtown Raleigh. Wake Party Republican Chair, Darren Eustance, and others will discuss details around Sheriff Gerald Baker's decision to suspend the Wake County Citizens Well-Check program.

"Once again, we see Wake County elected officials neglecting some of the most needy in our community," said Darren Eustance, Chair of the Wake County Republican Party. "This program, developed by former Sheriff Donnie Harrison, serves a portion of our population who deserve our care and attention. Unfortunately, the county is setting them aside in favor of other financial priorities."

With 100 participants in the program ending on July 1st and many more on the waiting list, Wake County Republicans are urging the Democrat-led county to consider re-prioritizing funding for the program. In 2005, Wake County recognized aging as "a significant challenge in the coming years in the form of a rapidly growing senior population, many of whom are disadvantaged" in the Wake County Aging Plan and further stated, "Population projections supplied by the Wake County Planning Office indicate that the over-55 population will increase 62% by 2010, and 161% by 2020, relative to year 2000 US Census data".

Wake County Republican Chair, Darren Eustance will be available for public comment both before and after the press conference.
