Goose Creek State Park Calendar of Events for November & December 2018 | Eastern North Carolina Now

    Goose Creek's listing of programs being offered from November 10 - January 1. We hope that you can attend one or more of these interesting, fact-filled programs that are offered free to the public. Three of the programs you will need to register for due to limited space.

    Basics of Prescribed Burning - Saturday, November 10 10:00 a.m.

    Fire is a valuable tool in maintaining a healthy ecosystem. We will talk about the reason why we burn, how we burn and how it can benefit the landscape. Meet in the visitor center.

    Fall Colors - Hike and Craft - Saturday, November 17 10:30 a.m.

    Join us as we take a short hike to collect some brightly colored autumn leaves. After our hike and a brief presentation, we will create fall themed candle holders from mason jars and our collected leaves. Due to limited space, please call the office to register for this program at 252-923-2191. Meet in the visitor center.

    After Thanksgiving Day Hike - Friday, November 23 1:00 p.m.

    Come burn off those holiday calories. Join a ranger at the park for a short hike around the Live Oak and Mallard Creek Trails and learn about the unique ecology of the area. Come prepared for the weather and meet at the swim beach parking lot.

    Live Oak Trail Hike - Saturday, December 1 2:00 p.m.

    Meet at the swim beach parking lot to join a ranger on a leisurely stroll along the Live Oak Trail.

    Mistletoe - History and Holiday Craft - Saturday, December 8 10:30 a.m.

    Join us for a short presentation on mistletoe. We will discuss what the plant looks like in the wild, as well as its history and how it has become a holiday tradition. After the presentation we will create small mistletoe Christmas ornaments. Due to limited space, please call the office at 252-923-2191 to register for this program. Meet at the visitor center.

    All About Bears - Saturday, December 15 2:00 p.m.

    Meet at the visitor center to learn all about the life and biology of black bears by taking a virtual tour of Eastern North Carolina. You will discover when and where is the best place to view these sometimes-elusive animals.

    Welcome to Goose Creek - Sunday, December 23 2:00 p.m.

    This presentation will introduce all the wonderful things you can find at the park from recreational opportunities to our wonderful natural communities. This is great for first-time visitors or anyone wanting to get to know the park. Meet at the visitor center.

    Campfire Cooking - Saturday, December 29 11:00 a.m.

    Join us around the campfire as we learn a few simple recipes and cooking techniques to try on your next camping adventure. Dress appropriately for the weather. Due to limited space, please call the office at 252-923-2191 to register for this program. Park in the primitive campground parking lot and meet at campsite #1.

    First Day Hike - Tuesday, January 1 10:00 a.m.

    Come out and enjoy the first day at Goose Creek State Park. Start off the new year with a hike along the Pamlico River while looking for waterfowl and other wildlife along the way. Dress for the weather and meet at the last parking lot on the main road.

The Rivers East Workforce Development Board has been awarded a National Dislocated Worker Grant (NDWTG) in the amount of $275,000 to assist the employees of the QVC Rocky Mount Distribution Center that reside in the Rivers East region.
It began as a light rain Thursday night, January 20th, with temperatures a balmy 46 degrees, and by morning a thin layer of ice clung to the firm, bright reddish green Nandina leaves prevalent upon my personal grounds here in Mac'swood.
The renovated and recently revived Turnage Theater has fallen on some pretty hard times as of late, and is being forced to shutter its doors.
I love watching, and taking pictures of small beautiful things just as much as I love making images of wide sweeping vistas. It is all part of God's natural plan, and I am fortunate to have the opportunity to record it for all posterity.
