Representative Boswell Releases Legislation to Reopen Water Testing Office in Dare County | Eastern North Carolina Now

Press Release:

Raleigh, N.C.     Representative Beverly G. Boswell (R-Dare) announced today legislation she plans to file during the upcoming 2018 short legislative session to reestablish the northern N.C. Dept. of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) water testing laboratory in Dare County.

During the 2017 legislative session, the Southern Shores Civic Association, Town of Southern Shores, and Dare County Board of Commissioners requested the N.C. General Assembly to provide the necessary funds to reopen the laboratory to sample and analyze the bacteria levels in the Currituck Sound at Soundview Park in Southern Shores, N.C., as well as several other locations throughout Northeastern North Carolina.

Due to receiving the request well past the 2017 bill filing deadline, Representative Boswell made a commitment to the stakeholders that if it wasn't addressed during the 2017 legislative session that she would file a bill during the 2018 short session.

Recognizing the need and staying true to her commitment, the proposed legislation (attached to this release) would appropriate $176,946 in recurring funds and $95,898 in nonrecurring funds to NCDEQ so the Department could re-establish the shellfish sanitation and recreational water quality laboratory in Nags Head, including the establishment of one lab technician position for the laboratory.

"Every year, millions of visitors travel to the Outer Banks to experience are pristine sandy beaches, world-class fishing, and remarkable scenic beauty. The legislation that I am sponsoring will help us protect our natural resources by again sampling and analyzing our coastal waters to ensure they are safe for wading, swimming and shellfishing," Representative Boswell said. "And make no mistake - protecting our natural resources is critical to the health and well-being of every North Carolinian, and I hope to have this proposed bill included and funded in the 2018 state budget."
