Jones Votes to Protect Young Athletes from Abuse

News Release:

WASHINGTON, DC     Yesterday evening, Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) voted for final passage of S. 534, Protecting Young Victims from Sexual Abuse and Safe Sport Authorization Act of 2017. This legislation, introduced by Congresswoman Susan Brooks (IN-5) in the House of Representatives, would mandate amateur athletics governing bodies to report allegations of abuse to law enforcement, make it easier to report the abuse, and institute firmer prevention policies. Congressman Jones released the following statement:

"For young athletes, sports facilities should be places of refuge, security, and above all else, fun." said Congressman Jones. "Unfortunately sick predators, the likes of Larry Nassar, have taken advantage of innocent young boys and girls. This is truly unconceivable, and we in Congress will not stand for it. Thank you to my colleagues for passing this legislation, and I have no doubt President Trump will promptly sign it into law."

    S. 534 passed the House with a vote of 406-3, and now heads to the president's desk to be signed into law.
