Orrin Hatch is retiring - My first and Last Political post for 2018 | Eastern North Carolina Now

Before anyone gets carried away and gets their hopes up with the second part of this title, I want to explain that is is not a New Year's resolution, just a passing thought that is subject to re-evaluation. "Never fear, my new year's resolutions have a life span of anywhere from ½ minute to 364 ½ days. I am a big believer that there is no such thing as making personal changes. Most changes are merely a hesitation which can be reversed on a whim. Real change occurs when they lower you into the ground or put you on the mantle in an URN. Now that is real change." Bobby Tony

Orrin Hatch is retiring.

Mitt Romney may run for his seat in Utah. Oh my God, what will we do now? Will Mitt and the President get along?  Will Mitt be another John McCain who looks for opportunities to stick it in the face of Donald Trump because of something he said about him during the campaign?  Will President Trump be able to control his bombast because he needs the vote of Romney for his agenda?

The news media is all aflutter about this possibility which by my calendar will not happen until November of 2018 and will not take effect until January 2019. As usual, I did a detailed analysis of the situation by searching on Orrin Hatch. Here is what I found.

No news story would be complete without trying to place it in context. The best way to do that is to look at the Google Tweet highlights.

Having done all the research needed to satisfy my insatiable curiosity, I have concluded that, like the weather, plenty of things about this revelation are not predictable at this time. I have TIVO'ed the three main news stations and tagged it for later review. They are CNN, MSNBC and Fox News.  All are spending their precious airtime discussing something that will happen until eleven months from now and will not take effect until a year.

I will make one prediction on this matter now and I want to get it on record.

There are several IFs that come to mind:

  • If Orrin Hatch retires

  • If Mitt Romney runs for his sat

  • If Mitt wins the seat

If all these are true then several Will? Come to mind.

  • Will Mitt Romney hold a grudge against Trump for some of the things he said?
  • Will President Trump change his bombastic approach in order to placate Mitt Romney?

   Here is my answer:

NO

We have possibly the most honorable Senator (Hatch) retiring who may be replaced with another honorable man (Romney).  There will be no change in the conduct of the Utah Senator seat regarding civility.

We have the most practical President we have ever had who is devoid of any trace of  permanent ideology and is only concerned with making a DEAL for his current wishes.

The Result:

It is a match made in heaven; honorable man meets practical man; they will both act in the same manner that they have in the past. If they both agree on an issue, there will be no drama, other wise: LOOKOUT!

The only question remaining in this whole scenario is this:

Should I continue to let my pipes drip during this January 2018 cold snap in Georgia. Everything else will take care of it self.

Say it ain't so Bobby Tony.

Hey, I have an idea. Do more of this, but with your continual, slicing wit. Then we can tell our readers, you were just kidding about 'no more political commentary in 2018'.

They'll buy that.
