Tax Relief for American Families

Last week, the Senate voted to take us one step closer to historic tax reform that will lead to bigger paychecks for hardworking Americans, and will make our nation more competitive at the global level. In the coming days, differences between the House and Senate versions of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act will be resolved and improvements will be made, and I'm confident the end result will deliver on our promise to provide much-needed tax relief for the American people.

Funding Our Military

This week, the President signed the FY2018 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) into law. This legislation reaffirms our nation's commitment to supporting the brave men and women in uniform and reestablishes America's commitment to a strong national defense and protecting its interests abroad. I am proud it included several of my provisions that make critical improvements to Camp Lejeune and Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, provide an across the board pay raise for servicemembers, and implement important reforms that will make life easier for military families.

Strengthening the Background Check System

Recently, I co-sponsored bipartisan legislation to ensure federal and state authorities comply with existing law and accurately report relevant criminal history records to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). The Fix NICS Act is commonsense, bipartisan legislation that strikes the right balance between addressing legitimate public safety concerns and protecting the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Americans.

Honoring Human Rights Day

Last week, I introduced a resolution in the United States Senate honoring Human Rights Day and the 69th Anniversary of the 1948 ratification of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which affirmed the rights of individuals and set the standard for human rights protections. As co-chair of the Senate Human Rights Caucus, I will continue to work on behalf of those who advocate for basic human rights and ensure that the United States continues to set the standard for promoting freedom across the world.
