Jones Votes against $1.2 Trillion Spending Package | Eastern North Carolina Now

News Release:

    WASHINGTON, DC     Today, Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) continued his long stand against excessive government spending by voting against H.R. 3354 - a massive $1.2 trillion omnibus federal spending package for fiscal year 2018. This legislation blatantly violates the Budget Control Act of 2011 by surpassing spending caps by over $72 billion. In addition, $87 billion was added to the bill for Overseas Contingency Operations (OCO) funding, including the continued waste and abuse of American taxpayers' money in Afghanistan. This amount is not offset or paid for, meaning it is borrowed and added to the deficit and the debt.

    "Here we go again," said Congressman Jones. "Our national debt just surpassed $20 trillion. Our annual federal deficit is nearly $700 billion. Why? Because, year after year, Congress keeps passing bills like this. We keep digging the debt hole deeper. Sooner or later, we won't be able to get out. The consequences will be disastrous. And the real shame of it is that we're doing this to our children and our grandchildren."

    H.R. 3354 passed the House by a vote of 211-198, and will be sent to the Senate for further consideration.

    Congressman Jones has devoted his time in service to sounding the alarm about wasteful spending and the rising debt. He has consistently voted against raising the debt limit and wasteful spending bills. Over the past 13 years, he is the only member of Congress to vote against every bloated federal budget.
