The History of the Bandanna – Well a short version

Here are some Various legitimate uses of Bandanna
  • head band to keep your hair off your eyes when working outside
  • worn as ear muffs in cold weather
  • hot pad to move a hot pot from the coals at camp
  • red bandanna, in case you get lost and need to be found
  • as a tourniquet
  • sling for an arm injury
  • protect your eyes during a blizzard
  • head scarf
  • bracelets or a wrist bracelets
  • you think they look cool
I grew up watching cowboys use their ever-present Bandanna as a tool for any number of things. Occasionally they were used as a mask to hid one's face. The Creative cowboys modified the bandanna to make a mask that covered their eyes while they saved the west from crooks and scalawags. A crook would never take the time to craft a face mask like the Lone Ranger or Zorro.

Some of our best country and western stars use them as a accessories to enhance their image. Occasionally a Rock Star joined in on the craze.

Still others have used them as items of clothing, which always made me wonder if they used a Square Knot or a Granny Knot which are both notoriously known to Boy Scouts as poor knots to tie two ends together and hold things in. They can loosen and fall apart, thereby losing the goodies. Knots and Such The picture below is an example of two female bank robbers. When the police questioned the male witnesses they all agreed that the girls were wearing Bandannas.

Of course, Bandannas have always been used when the wearer was up to no good. Using it as a mask to cover your face when you were doing something nefarious and wrong has been around about as long as people. After an intensive search of the internet, I have not been able to find a suitable example of a bandit with a Bandanna that was not owned by some guy named Getty. Because of that, I had to create my own example.

The latest craze is to use a Bandanna face mask when you are exercising your right of "FREE SPEECH" but do not really believe enough in your rights to show your face. After all, if all you were doing were just protesting, you should have no fear of being arrested and prosecuted for violence and rioting. I know some will ask why would a Confirmed Narcissist like me would feel the need to wear a Bandanna. Well, believe it or not even I have some writing standards and the Bandanna allows me to hide my true identity. Do you think it will work?

Click on picture or here for NBC story  about North Dakota bill that would ban protesters from wearing masks.

I realize I am being somewhat reactionary here, but I thought that 'EVERYONE' has "the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." I think that is still true except on college campuses. If all you are doing is expressing yourself, why would you need to wear a mask?   The First Amendment

For the non political moderates in the readership, here is an interesting article about the History of Bandanna. Apparently there is some disagreement with the spelling of Bandanas or Bandannas.
