State Highway Patrol Commander and Deputy Commander Sworn in | Eastern North Carolina Now

    Raleigh: Col. Glenn McNeill was officially sworn in today as commander of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. McNeill, who has served with the organization since 1994, will be the 27th commander since the Patrol's inception in 1929.

    Governor Roy Cooper and Public Safety Secretary Erik A. Hooks provided remarks prior to the oath of office, administered by Supreme Court Associate Justice Cheri Beasley.

    "The dedicated men and women of the Highway Patrol work tirelessly, every day and through all the long nights of the year, to protect the people of North Carolina, and I'm grateful for their service," Governor Cooper said. "I look forward to working with Commander McNeill in the days to come to help our state grow stronger and safer."

    Also included in the ceremony was the swearing-in of Lt. Colonel Charles "Vic" Ward, who has served with the organization since 1990.

    "These men have long careers of serving the state with professionalism, high moral character and integrity. They both have a broad range of experience in the Highway Patrol and have earned the well-deserved respect of their fellow troopers and others in law enforcement," Hooks added. "I am confident that they will continue to build on the traditions and high standards that make the Patrol one of the premier uniformed law enforcement agencies in the country."

    Several state, county and local officials were on hand for the event.

    The ceremony began promptly at 10 a.m., taking place in the Old House Chamber.
