News Release:

      Sunday, January 1, 2017       First Day Hike       10:00 am

    This hike will cover the Mallard Creek Trail, Huckleberry Trail and the Live Oak Trail. Total distance will be approximately one-mile and will bring us through new trail extensions, pine woods, live oak ecosystems and along the Pamlico River. Meet in the last parking lot.

      Saturday, January 7, 2017       Birds of Prey       10:00 am

    Discover the amazing habits and adaptations that our native birds of prey share. We will discuss our large bald eagle, the tiny screech owl and so many more in between. Meet at the visitor center for a fun and eye opening experience.

      Saturday, January 14, 2017       Pine Needle Basket Making       10:00 am

   Learn how to make artwork out of the beautiful long leaf pine needles like the Native Americans long ago. Meet at the park visitor center and practice the basic techniques to start making a basket. All materials will be provided. This program is for ages 16 and older. Please call the park office to register as space is limited.

      Saturday, January 21, 2017       Basic and Benefits of Prescribed Fire       2:00 pm

   Did you know that fire plays an important role in the ecosystem at Goose Creek? This presentation covers why we burn, how we burn and some of the equipment we use to incorporate fire into the landscape. Meet at the visitor center.

      Saturday, January 28, 2017       Mallard Creek Hike       10:00 am

    Take a short walk down to Mallard Creek and check out our new proposed trail extension. Meet in the last parking lot.

The Rivers East Workforce Development Board has been awarded a National Dislocated Worker Grant (NDWTG) in the amount of $275,000 to assist the employees of the QVC Rocky Mount Distribution Center that reside in the Rivers East region.

It began as a light rain Thursday night, January 20th, with temperatures a balmy 46 degrees, and by morning a thin layer of ice clung to the firm, bright reddish green Nandina leaves prevalent upon my personal grounds here in Mac'swood.
The renovated and recently revived Turnage Theater has fallen on some pretty hard times as of late, and is being forced to shutter its doors.
I love watching, and taking pictures of small beautiful things just as much as I love making images of wide sweeping vistas. It is all part of God's natural plan, and I am fortunate to have the opportunity to record it for all posterity.
After four full days of frozen Mac'swood cabin fever, I struggled out to take an iced numbing look a my old muse.
When the ice took over, it was unrelenting, and with the full sun of cloudless days, the snow saw little melt
It was hailed as the Bomb Cyclone, a storm consisting of warmer moist air from the Gulf of Mexico that picked up a spinning motion after its center crossed the northern Florida coast, now over the Gulf Stream, and without delay barrelled north up the Atlantic Seaboard.
Sunsets are a natural phenomenon, and always a process where one can estimate that the evening will produce a magnificent sunset, but, one can never be altogether sure until it either happens, or the light of the day unceremoniously just turns dark.
