Burr Week in Review: Burr Tours NC Businesses, Ross Again on Defense Over ACLU Career | Eastern North Carolina Now

Press Release:

Raleigh, NC -This week saw Senator Burr campaign throughout the state, speaking to county Republican groups and touring North Carolina businesses. For the third week in a row, Deborah Ross found herself explaining why, as the head of the ACLU, she chose to protect convicted criminals instead of standing up for victims.

A new story from CNN detailed Deborah Ross' involvement in a "gruesome" sexual assault case during her tenure at the ACLU.

  • "But in the mid-1990s, Ross found herself in a different position, urging the North Carolina courts to impose a lenient sentence on a 13-year-old who sexually assaulted his 23-year-old neighbor -- with the victim's 20-month-old son watching in the same room. The state Supreme Court rejected Ross' push, sentencing Andre Green to life in prison for what it said was a "heinous" crime.
  •

    ...

  • "Before spending 10 years in the state House, Ross was a top attorney for a decade with the North Carolina chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, a liberal group advocating for individual's constitutional rights. And over the course of four years, Ross made a proactive public and private push to urge the state courts to try Green as a juvenile, something that the state Supreme Court said could have set him free within four years time.

    ...

"But the court disagreed, upholding his conviction on charges of a first-degree sexual offense, burglary and attempted rape for what it called a "highly vicious" crime.

    ...

"Ross declined to be interviewed about her views on the case.

    ...

  • "According to court documents and the police report reviewed by CNN, Green broke a glass door to enter his neighbor's home in the middle of a rainy night in 1994, after stalking her for six weeks. She immediately called 911, but Green - who was large for his age, standing at roughly 5-foot-10, 180 pounds -- ripped the phone out of the socket. He swung at her with a broomstick, which broke apart after it hit a golf club she was using to defend herself.
  • "Green punched the woman upwards of 15 times, tore off her clothes and used his fingers to penetrate her, while performing oral sex on her. The victim accused Green of penetrating her "once or twice" with his penis, according to court documents. He only stopped when the police arrived, running out the front door of the house -- despite threatening to "rip her insides out," the records say. She was badly injured and bruised, while her son who witnessed the attack, she said, was emotionally scarred.

Winston-Salem Journal: Burr Stops To Take Call About Brussels Attack While On Re-Election Campaign For U.S. Senate

"There aren't many members of the U.S. Senate who stop to take a call about a suspected terrorist attack in Europe while campaigning for re-election.

"U.S. Sen. Richard Burr, a Winston-Salem Republican, took such a call Wednesday.

His post as chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence is one of the apparent distinctions between Burr and Democratic opponent Deborah Ross, a Raleigh lawyer, former state legislator and former state director of the American Civil Liberties Union.

"While campaigning, Burr said that he brings institutional knowledge to the table, that he is better suited to protect the United States, noting that he and U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., are the only members of the Senate Intelligence Committee who were members of an Intelligence committee during the Sept. 11 attacks. Burr was a member of the House committee at the time.

"U.S. Sen. Richard Burr told supporters Monday in Pinehurst that he will need every vote he can get in Moore County and other Republican strongholds in North Carolina to defeat Democrat Deborah Ross in November.

"... But I am running against someone who matches her. ... I am running against somebody that cheered when the U.S. Congress could not muster enough votes to present to you a change to the Constitution to put our flag where it should be - to where people can't burn it, where a court has to decide that is your right. It shouldn't be your right. People have died to lift that flag, people that live in this community."

"The Gaston County investment is the largest Owens Corning has ever made. The company promised to create 110 jobs by the end of this year. They received 47 acres of land, $9.3 million in tax refunds from Gaston County and $1.69 million from the state for making the move.

"I think North Carolina is No. 1, No. 2 or No. 3 on everybody's list, whether they're domestic or foreign companies," Burr said. "It's because we bring to the table the knowledge-based work force. We bring to the table the skills-based work force. Now that we've got our taxes competitive with neighboring states, we win out in almost every case with capital investment that is coming to North Carolina.
