Tillis Votes To Prevent Terrorists From Being Able To Purchase Firearms | Eastern North Carolina Now

    WASHINGTON, D.C.     Today, Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) voted in support of an amendment to the Commerce, Justice and Science Appropriations Bill that would prevent suspected terrorists from purchasing firearms and provide law enforcement with more tools to prevent future attacks. The amendment was blocked by Democrats.

    The amendment, introduced by Senator John Cornyn (R-TX), would give the attorney general the authority to delay the purchase of a firearm for up to three business days for suspected terrorists or individuals investigated for terrorism over the last five years. Federal, state, and local law enforcement officials would be notified immediately so they could monitor the situation, and the Justice Department could seek a court order to block the sale of the firearm.

    Unlike an amendment that was offered by Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), the Cornyn amendment would uphold the due process rights of American citizens.

    "It is disappointing the Senate was unable to pass a commonsense, constitutional measure that would give law enforcement officials more tools and authority to help keep firearms out of the hands of terrorists," said Senator Tillis. "While some in Washington unfortunately seem intent on advancing an incredibly polarizing agenda, all members of Congress need to start working together, within the framework of the Constitution, to address the threat posed by radical Islamic terrorists both at home and abroad."
