BMX Riders Sport Gold Pedals For Mirra | Eastern North Carolina Now

Press Release:

GREENVILLE, N.C.     Dave Mirra, global BMX legend and Greenville hometown hero, once rode a gold-plated bike for the X-Games, and this year at PirateFest, riders from Protown BMX will honor his memory by performing on bikes with the pedals painted gold.

"Dave was one of my closest friends," said Protown BMX founder Mike Mancuso. "He was a true inspiration both on and off his BMX bike ... and is missed and thought of every day."

Mancuso said everyone in the sport is embracing the "gold pedals for Mirra" theme. Everyone remembers the gold-plated bike Haro built for Dave, he said, "so the gold pedals tribute is perfect."

Protown BMX has performed each year at PirateFest since 2012, showcasing a variety of spins, whips and flips.

"Greenville was dubbed Protown USA by the action sports community for the numerous BMX pros that reside here. What better way to showcase what our city is globally known for," said Mancuso.

The riders will perform during PirateFest at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 9 on Third Street in front of the Pitt County Courthouse.

"Our Protown BMX show is action-packed, and we continue to bring the best tricks with positive messages to each performance," Mancuso said. "We will have numerous top riders with us, and when the crowd gets loud, the riders get stoked to do the biggest tricks. We may even see a brand new trick attempted for the first time."

PirateFest begins Friday, April 8, with the Buccaneer Bash, a live music concert featuring The Monitors and Nashville based bluegrass band, Barefoot Movement. On Saturday, April 9, PirateFest begins at 10 a.m. The celebration takes place in the Uptown district, along Evans Street from Fifth to First and on the Town Common and will end with a free concert from Smash Mouth at the Town Common from 5-7 p.m.

The wide variety of events and activities include fine arts and crafts for sale, three live music stages, a "grog garden," pirate entertainers, a Parade of Pirates, a Children's Pirate Costume Contest, a Pirate Encampment, carnival rides, fossil dig and free kayak rides.

Organized by Uptown Greenville, Pitt County Arts Council at Emerge, the City of Greenville, Greenville Convention and Visitor's Bureau and East Carolina University's Volunteer Service-Learning Center, PirateFest will showcase the best of the region from artists, to restaurants, to unique recreational activities. Visitors are invited to escape the ordinary, if only for a weekend!
