Press Release:

Raleigh, N.C.     Governor Pat McCrory commended Congress for heeding calls from the nation's governors and passing the Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act, which will provide States the long-term fiscal certainty Governor McCrory called for during his testimony before the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure earlier this year. In addition to representing North Carolina, Governor McCrory appeared before the Committee in March as a member of the National Governors Association Executive Committee.

"This will provide North Carolina the certainty we need to continue to build the roadmap in our 25-Year Transportation Vision," Governor McCrory said. "This carefully thought out plan will strengthen our economy and provide more jobs for our citizens. I urge President Obama to sign this bill quickly."

The legislation provides $305 billion over the next five years to address the nation's highway, transit and rail programs.

Governor McCrory, working with the state's Congressional delegation, is pleased Interstate designations for two important high priority corridors were included in the bill.

The Raleigh-Norfolk Corridor, utilizing US Highways 17 and 64 through Rocky Mount, Williamston, and Elizabeth City; and the US 70 Corridor, utilizing portions of U.S. Highways 70 and 117 to better connect Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, the North Carolina Global TransPark, Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, and the Port of Morehead City with the rest of North Carolina and the eastern seaboard were both designated future Interstates.

"The selection of specific highways to be future parts of the Interstate system is important to citizens and businesses and will be a major business recruitment tool for local communities and the State of North Carolina," Governor McCrory said. "I want to thank the members of our Congressional delegation who supported both of these corridors."
