Unity | Eastern North Carolina Now

    As my life progresses, I am more concerned with the way my country is lacking in unity. If our forefathers had been as we are today, we would still be a part of the Crown. We have a government today whose only joy is in power. People are homeless, who cares? Children aren't getting a good education, great! They will be more able to be controlled later on in life. People are dying due to rising health care and insurance costs? There will be less people to worry about. We are losing our rights more and more in the name of homeland security.

We have become a nation of sheep. What happened to the spirit we Americans had? Why do we no longer protest, but simply go along with the wars, the loss of jobs to foreign countries, and the loss of our very individuality? I remember a generation whose chant was: "Hell no, we won't go!" How about this one? "POWER TO THE PEOPLE." Come On America, wake up! Take back our country; be vocal about the injustices being done today! Voting alone will not change anything. We must join together.

    I know it is hard today. We have to keep a roof over our family's heads and food on the table. Has it not always been so? But we have to take control again. For example, fuel prices are so high that if you do have a job, it is costly just to get to work. As a member of the trucking industry, I have felt the effects. If you think that is not your problem, think about this. When it costs a driver more for fuel, he is forced to increase his fuel surcharge for moving goods across the nation. But that doesn't affect you, does it? But listen to this. Because my prices for moving goods increases, the factories and stores that I ship to will increase their prices, driving up the costs of products you buy. This affects everything. It affects the food you buy, the drugs you buy, the cost of education, the cost of hospitals and doctors. All need the products which are shipped daily by trucks. Our nation could be helped greatly just by lowering the cost of fuel. How could we drivers change things? We could unite. We could refuse to get behind the wheel until fuel prices come down. Some have tried, but not enough. There is no unity. If I don't haul a product, there is some greedy person who will, or maybe just somebody who is afraid of losing their truck or their home if they don't work. It doesn't matter what your job, religion, or sexual preferences; we must work together for change. It won't happen any other way.

    This is just one example. If you think that when neighbor is hurting doesn't concern you, you are wrong. For every action, there is a reaction. This is a basic law of nature. If we all went to the White House, we could make our voices' be heard. Come on America; get a backbone before it is too late. I love my country, how about you? I want her to continue to stand for the land of the free. I want the constitution to mean something. I don't want the war that was fought for freedom so many years ago to be for nothing. Together we stand, divided we fall. We are so divided. Let's change that.
