I am a twerp with a divinity degree also --- and from the same Southern Baptist denomination. The great conflict he joined was called "Conservative Resurgence." It was presented to the average Southern Baptist by several mega church pastors who blew long and hard that "Southern Baptists were becoming liberal."
Mike Huckabee was a large church pastor in Arkansas who has become governor since. He and Jerry Falwell are theological and political twins. They believe in a thorough mixing of Church and State with only the Fundamentalist view of the Bible and Christian religion in charge.
It is interesting how we criticize the Moslem Fundamentalists of being Terrorists, but Christian Fundamentalists as being "of God." They call their God "Allah," we call ours "Lord." If you extend to other cultures and races --- the Native Americans called him "Great White Father," Jews called him "YHWH" which is unpronounceable since it has no vowels. We seldom realize the Jewish tradition believed that if you pronounce a name you control the person in some way. Their term is usually translated as "Jehovah."
Does anyone have the knowledge and power to pronounce whether a person is appropriately religious or not?
I was taught by my Baptist Preacher father that
• God is the only Judge of righteousness
• We are saved by Grace rather than Works
• No one can earn their way into heaven outside of Faith in a Messiah
• "Judge not that ye be not judged for the same judgment you apply to others, God will apply to you."
• Jesus spoke of forgetting the beam in your own eye when you chase the sawdust speck in your neighbor's eye.
I was taught that a serious part of good religion is HUMILITY. We are not superior to one another in the area of faith and practice. We should be able to allow for diversity to be good Baptists cooperating together to support the Missionary Enterprise of Southern Baptists.
One of the aspects of STUPID is constant judging of others so you don't have to consider yourself and your shortcomings. Only God is perfect and omniscient (knows all). We are not God. We are humans created in his Image. "Imago Dei" is the Latin term.
The Pope's main language as Pontiff is Latin. The reason for the Latin --- it was the official language of the Roman Empire. That Empire covered all of Europe at one time and they tried to enforce conformity and obedience to pay taxes to the Emperor who lived in Rome. They were a miserable failure at ruling the world of their day. Revolts in parts of the Empire were constant. They built the Roman Road so their armies could quickly quench any revolt with the sword. Their enforcement was the same as current Moslem conformity --- OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!
Today is a day in which the Pope addresses Congress. He was invited by John Bohner --- who is Catholic. The Supreme Court Justices --- who are Catholic and conservatives all --- plan NOT to be present. Religious zeal in current day America is driving us apart despite the Constitutional article that "Congress shall make no laws concerning religion."
Our Founding Fathers saw clearly that a nation founded on a single religion is NOT a nation of true freedom and justice for all. They did such because they had witnessed the travesty of tyranny in the Old World where the greatest sources of hate and revolt were religious in nature.
It interests me greatly how a new kind of Pope who considers himself "one of the people" is drawing such fear from Conservatives in America along with his own powers that be.
Is it possible he points up the recent problem of America that the rich are trying to control the poor and keep out a new Minimum Wage? The Pope is drawing personal criticism from his own religious group because he is from a poor background and also an immigrant.
In our day and time the Mega Church with its 6-digit earning Pastors, like Mike Huckabee, are at the core of religious wealth. They are the King of their Church. A large and giving bunch of Baptists in America were duped into adopting a new Creed when they were always non-creedal and joined with a desire to support missionaries sharing the Gospel around the world.
When we lose sight of working together despite personal differences, we win and grow. When we start looking for the speck of sawdust constantly in the other citizens' eyes, we foster hate and revolt.
In sum, WE LOSE OUR WAY WITH FREEDOM!
