The figures and times show me clearly the battle of Conservative/Liberal ideology. I came to NC as a resident first in 1967. I was becoming a member of the student body at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest. I had just left GA with smile on face because Lester Maddox had become the Ultra-conservative Governor. I tuned in Channel 5 Raleigh and there was Jesse doing his editorial commentary. I could not help but say, "Lester has a political First Cousin in NC! OMG"
The real fight and money spent is over being Progressive or Regressive, in my view. GA got it's challenges with the unstoppable growth of Atlanta Metro. It also had a County Unit system of vote counting. In other words, whatever majority vote in any county was, the entire UNIT went to that party. Once the rural unit was deemed undemocratic, the popular vote began to run the elections. Conservatives in GA did not like it, but it changed the political color of GA.
Rapid change is hard to digest. Racial issues were grounded in such. Now Atlanta has become a great mixing pot Internationally. The hate over blocks of immigrants with foreign religions grows in Atlanta.
HATE and GREED are more the issues than political party, in my view.
