Governor McCrory Names Acting SBI Director | Eastern North Carolina Now

    Charlotte, NC– Governor Pat McCrory appointed Bernard W. (B.W.) Collier II acting director of the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) today.

    "B.W. Collier's distinguished law enforcement background and leadership skills make him the ideal candidate to lead this elite agency," said Governor McCrory. "Collier's 26 years as a SBI agent coupled with his experience at Alcohol Law Enforcement give me complete confidence in his abilities to carry out the SBI's mission."

    Collier will be sworn into office on Monday.

    During his tenure with the SBI, Collier served as a drug investigator, pilot, arson and crime scene agent, canine handler, technical agent and bomb squad commander. Collier was director and special agent in charge of the North Carolina Information Sharing and Analysis Center, a SBI section that deals with criminal information and intelligence gathering, when he was appointed director of Alcohol Law Enforcement in 2013.

    Collier is a North Carolina native and North Carolina State University graduate. He served in the N.C. Army National Guard from 1983 to 1989. His mother is a retired school teacher and his father is a retired State Highway Patrol lieutenant. Collier and his wife, Ann, have two grown children.

    The 2014-2015 state budget, signed earlier today by Governor McCrory, transferred the State Bureau of Investigation from the North Carolina Department of Justice to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, where it will operate as an independent agency. The SBI director is appointed by the governor and confirmed by the General Assembly for an eight-year term.

    Also transferring to the Department of Public Safety will be the Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) Commission from the Commerce Department. The ABC Commission will operate as an independent agency.
