Not liking someone's personality is a poor excuse for censorship. You just have to wonder why people would be so upset with Hood Richardson and Stan Deatherage. It couldn't be because of all the conservative policy from these commissioners on the Beaufort County Commission, because they have never had the votes to enact such policy. For a long while the Democrats were in the majority of this commission. Then when the Republicans gained control of the Board by election, it did not happen because two and lately one Republican joined the Democrats in actual policy making as well as organization. The result of this is that the two conservative, principled Republicans have never been able to enact their own conservative policies. So, why have these commissioners been attacked so vehemently over the years by some?
It can only be because they have publically complained, and they have publically asked the hard questions that some have not wanted to answer. The unknowing may wonder if there is any risk in doing that? I'll not answer for the two mentioned commissioners. We in the public can see some of the ramifications of the attacks on public figures in public perceptions. There is more that is not for me to tell. I can tell that just an interested private citizen with questions and strong opinions, like me, can expect phone calls with or without a voice on the other end, with or without outright threats directly or implied. Some people don't like questions. One could write a book about all the issues over the years in Beaufort County, so let's just consider the issue of the day: The jail issue. This issue begs for a list of legitimate questions: 1) Why is the Beaufort County Commission (by 4 to 3 vote) wanting to impose more long term debt on an already debt ridden county? 2) Why is public debt being forced on residents without a public referendum that is our constitutional right? 3) Why did the Republican led state legislature not close the unconstitutional loop-hole opened by a previous Democrat led state legislature, allowing this kind of public debt atrocity? 4) Why do four county commissioners not want to discus how many years of debt payment they will oblige us for? 5) Why do these four commissioners downplay how much our taxes will increase to pay for this long term burden? 6) Why do some not want to talk about the ramifications of putting a jail complex first in the Washington Industrial Park and now proposed more recently in the Chocowinity Industial Park? There ARE ramifications to these actions. Would the public want to silence these sorts of questions? As for me, I want more questions and a lot more answers to those questions. The results of public policy fall direcly on us and onto our children. That, my friends, is as personal as it gets. |
Why else could an issue such as 'commissioner behavior' be a contributing issue in a primary election, a primary election that was well swayed by Independents in a time when real Republicans did not go to the polls in sufficient enough numbers to counter the huge amount of money that bought that election for the political neophytes.
Sadly, Hood and I have lately remarked that what this county may well need is a good old fashioned tax property increase - one large enough to get the attention of those that really don't pay attention for whatever purpose, and believe that commissioner conduct and the pleasure of giving away a hospital are the real issues we should embrace.
The problem with that is that those of us that do pay attention will suffer as well. I will be sorry about that eventuality, because it will occur just as soon as we have an economic downturn, and I fear it will be severe.
Consider the fact that Hood will not always be on that board, and I am done for the foreseeable future, and you have to ask yourself: Can Ashley Woolard, Greg Dority and Bill Tarpening, or the other RINOs run that board when times get that tough.
Think about it.
I just thought about it. I don't think there is a dime's difference between the RINOs' handlers and the Woolard - Dority - Tarpening triumvirate. Therefore, I'm betting the taxpayers are screwed regardless, at this point, no matter what happens. I guess I'm a bit cynical at this point.
