A Scarborough Potpourri: Volume I | Eastern North Carolina Now

On occasion, we will offer two or more opinion vignettes from Gene Scarborough. These are two of them.

A Fine Lady

Have you ever met a gracious / deeply human / caring woman? I have, and I stayed at her mansion in Hartsville, SC.

She was the first person who proved to me how one with great wealth can treat her hired help with the same dignity and respect as she would the President of the United States. Were he a Democrat, she could call in the morning and get a personal return call before evening! I saw it myself!

Below is link concerning her favorite place, Kalmia Gardens --- and much more about her. Please look at it before the rest of my adventure is told.

A quick story about our meeting and relationship will tell much. I was going to my second church at Hartsville, SC, as the Associate Minister / Education / Youth. Our little baby was too young for my wife to come for the first week of my duty. She graciously offered for the young minister to stay at her house.

I was met at the door by her white-uniformed maid, Anna. Miss Mae was not feeling too well, but would be down in a minute, she said. I waited in her library and noted the damask curtains of the 16' ceiling room. On her shelf were 2 pictures. One, of a 40ish handsome man was inscribed: "To my friend Mae Coker" signed Averil Harriman (much in the 1950-60 news as Secretary of State in the Johnson Administration). My SC Democrat Farmer Granddaddy (J.A. Williams) would be so proud --- and how I wished he were alive to tell him!

Miss Mae entered the room in about 20 minutes and we chatted as if we were old friends. I asked her about the other picture of 2 couples standing on stone steps as I did not recognize them. "That is my parents on the steps of . He was the Under Secretary of the Treasury in the Roosevelt Administration." OH GRANDPA you should really see me now with one of the biggest Democrats of this century!

She was the most dignified and decent woman I have ever met in my entire lifetime. I have met many, but she stands out. Her house took up the entire block. Upstairs were 4 bedrooms, each with a Queen Anne canopy bed. The cover was stuffed with down. My wife could not believe it when we spent the next Monday night there along with our baby girl! We were a young couple in a mansion!

One last thing. When she was memorialized before burial, Miss Mae insisted a pall be placed over her casket. She gave it to the church for future use. The Pall is a black drape made to cover every casket. It is a symbol that all are equal in the eyes of God. No matter if your casket is a cardboard box or made of finest bronze, no one looking at it can know your status from finery to poverty.

May the likes of Miss Mae be many!

Sadly, few rich people forget where we all come from = dirt. Many go to great lengths these days --- to show how rich and mighty they are. They forget the best riches always come from decency / hard work / kindness / others who work for you being treated fairly / whether you are a "house servant," President, or "of color," it makes no difference!

Are we a Democratic Society whose elected officials do as the public wants?

I have felt for years we have a "governance above the government." What I mean by this is there are others in power beyond the elected ones. I first felt it when President John F. Kennedy was killed. He was about to pull the plug on Viet Nam and acknowledged to Walter Cronkite that it was basically a decision for the people of Viet Nam to make as to who would govern them--Viet Cong/South Vietnamese government. Not many months later, his brains were blown out in Dallas. THEN President Johnson delivered the goods to arms manufacturers and war profiteers. He sent my classmates and friends into the jungle for a protracted and limited war we could not win in a country warring from the Bronze Age.

I have hunted with a high-powered .270 Browning Automatic with Schwarsky scope. Bullets from it do not zig-zag. I have watched the slowed down Zapruder film of the head shot. It clearly hits him in the right temple and peels his head apart from front to back. My eyes and experience tell me----CONSPIRACY!

Now here is an excellent article from an academic standpoint out of Princeton. It is packed with statistics and recent decisions where the public wanted one thing and the rich and powerful got their legislation using our tax dollars from friends in banking and finance. This says GREED to me!
