WDN's small foray into local primary politics deserves my attention and my response | Eastern North Carolina Now

Stan Deatherage     Publisher's note (at 1:32 pm, May 5): If you read this article, which I originally posted about 34 hours ago, you would have noticed that I celebrated the WDN for making an attempt now, while admonishing them for taking such a low profile on their past political reporting, at least in a fairness sense. I also remarked that I was publishing my candidate information here (in BCN) because, the WDN generally does not publish political commentary or politics online, and, understandably, I wanted to offer online consumers the opportunity to view my comments.

Well ... after viewing their print publication (my wife found a copy somewhere), I can verify they are still taking a very low profile in political reporting in their print publication ... literally speaking of course. The profile of their print was so small, I could barely read the candidates' comments and just gave up. I guess my time was just too valuable for the struggle.
The Washington Daily News will try their hand at reporting on politics, which well operates under the accurate categorical department of 'better late than never'.

Shortly, after I filed to run for re-election, which was a rather late decision of on my part, I sent the Washington Daily News, and the Beaufort Observer my press release stating: that I was running for my 6th term, that these news outlets could use all or part of my press release providing that they kept the contextual point intact. In short, the Beaufort Observer did publish part of my press release, and then did link to the balance of it. The Washington Daily news published nothing - not in their paper, not online - notheing. The Beaufort bserver did as good publishers do: They published the content as per my very relaxed request.

Oddly, even though I am senior on our board and the incumbent candidate, the Washington Daily published all candidates' press release (all non incumbents), and did not publish mine. Irrespective of their longstanding policy that the Daily news not support Conservatives or conservative ideals, one would think that their readership would be many separate political stripes, and shouldn't they anticipate that some of their readers will loyally vote for me, or someone like me, just as some Liberals will always vote for politicians that use the public's treasury to buy their votes.

Just because the WDN has historically favored the liberal Democrat, one would think, in these times of the internet and the filming of most larger government meetings, that the Washington Daily News would be more receptive to divergent political opinions if not for them, but for their diverse readership. Unlike the WDN, Beaufort County NOW publishes the well presented articles and opinions from every political phiosophy, on every issue.

    Why?

Simply speaking, we are sincerely committed to the 'free press' provision of the 1st Amendment, and consider it our devout duty, as a community informational source, to provide a platform where a divergent community can come together to express a myriads of opinions and vital information.

Not all people see the People's government the same way, and that is why we have Representative government, with various constituencies that depend on the politicians that they support. When the Washington Daily News limits the news to the point that they only support one side of the argument, their readership suffers to the point that they will never be properly informed. If the WDN really cared about informing the public, they would make all information available to their readers, and when possible raise the their own understanding of such issues relative to Beaufort County, so as to provide a more cogent expression of theri impression of our place in this quickly changing world, where news and information is so pertinent to educating a more informed public, a more informed electorate.

Today, I champion a slightly different Washington Daily News, who, by this admission of this Candidate Questionnaire, does portend that they will allow me to speak directly to their readership, some may actually be my constituents. One can only hope that they will follow through this time. The Washington Daily News is a liberal publication, they have always been a liberal publication, and there is nothing wrong with that. My problem with the Washington Daily News has always been, for decades now except for a few short years, that they have existed in a journalistic world where they have exhibited an incredible overall lack of the fundamental knowledge about how government works, at all levels and the U.S. Constitution that powers it.

Publishing information about all candidates from all political ideologies would be a short step, but a good start toward becoming a credible publication once again.

Below, you will find an outline of the Candidate Questionnaire, with some answers, and my personal narrative espousing my governing ideals that I will continue to exhibit should I be nominated by my political party, and elected by Beaufort County's people in our general election in November, 2014. I will publish this on BCN for two purposes: I own the content and the WDN generally does not publish this these short candidate exposes on their online publication, which, in some cases, the public exclusively derives their news and information.

As Requested to be published, my reply to the WDN's Candidate Questionnaire

County Commissioner Stan Deatherage in 2013
My ultimate goal in standing for re-election is my quest to become an essential component in the first Republican majority in the history of Beaufort County. It remains an abject fact that there has never been a Republican majority, and it is an accompanying truth that I posses the innate tools to help lead a principled Republican majority to guide this county away from the unwise decisions of thoughtless politicians, governed by a prevailing special interest sector that has damaged, and will continue to damage this county to irreparable proportions if left unimpeded.

Even as a 5 term county commissioner, I am the proverbial outsider to a county commission that has: overbuilt schools in the wrong places; built a Hwy 17 bypass on the wrong side of Washington that was nearly built deep into Pitt County; the 'Chickengate' scandal that hastened an expensive lawsuit between Beaufort County and its school board; a supremely errant and wasteful economic development program that has produced no reasonable results; gave away a sewer franchise in the Belhaven area to that town that continues to plague their government; gave away Warren Field to the City of Washington; gave away a hospital for a slim fraction of its base value, when there were much better options available; and now they wish to build an expensive, overbuilt Southwest County Jail, without allowing the public their public vote - their democratic constitutional right.

In my years as your county representative, history proves that I have been on the right side of more votes, save Hood Richardson, than all county commissioners ever. Returning me to help lead a principled Republican majority is your best bet to end this encumbered special interest that has wrongly ruled Beaufort County for too long. - Beaufort County Commissioner Stan Deatherage
