Jones Statement on Fourth Anniversary of ObamaCare

WASHINGTON, D.C.     Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) issued the following statement in advance of March 23, 2014 – the fourth anniversary of the Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare, being signed into law.

“As we quickly approach the fourth anniversary of President Obama signing his disastrous healthcare plan into law, it has become clear that Obamacare is a burden on families in Eastern North Carolina and across the country,” said Congressman Jones. “Many individuals have suffered canceled insurance plans, forcing them to pay exorbitant rate increases for new plans that they do not want while being prohibited from visiting the doctors that they need. Furthermore, the Congressional Budget Office has confirmed that Obamacare will cause 2.5 million full-time jobs to disappear. The American people simply cannot afford this. That is why I voted against Obamacare each time it was considered in the House and why I have cosponsored every bill aimed at repealing or defunding the law. I will continue to work to counteract the negative effects of this unconstitutional takeover of our healthcare system.”

Jones Speaks out Against Use of Taxpayer Money for Representatives' First Class Travel

WASHINGTON, D.C.     Today, Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) called for a prohibition on members of Congress using taxpayer money to purchase first class or premium airline tickets for themselves, noting that the practice should be considered wasteful under any circumstances but is particularly egregious given that the national debt is over $17 trillion. In a letter to House Appropriations Committee leadership, Congressman Jones and two of his colleagues requested that language forbidding the use of tax dollars in this manner be included in the Fiscal Year 2015 Legislative Branch Appropriations Act. Expenses for representatives traveling between Washington and their home districts are paid with Member’s Representational Allowance funds, which, like all federal funds, are comprised of tax money.

“We in Congress have a responsibility to wisely use the American people’s money,” said Congressman Jones. “Representatives should never secure their own luxury travel at taxpayer expense, but they especially should not do so when our nation is buried in $17 trillion of debt.”

Congressman Jones is a longtime advocate for responsible congressional travel and has repeatedly introduced a measure that would bring transparency to the cost of taxpayer-funded travel by members of the House and Senate who take international trips using U.S. military aircraft.
