Governor McCrory Announces Appointments | Eastern North Carolina Now

    Raleigh, NC     The Office of Governor Pat McCrory announced the following appointments today:

    Historic Murfreesboro Commission

   •  Dr. Albert Roper (Norfolk, Va.) - Roper is retired from the medical field. He attended UNC-Chapel Hill and was a Morehead scholar. Roper is a reappointment to the board.

   •  LuAnn Joyner (Hertford County) - Joyner is the marketing and community relations specialist for Vidant Bertie Hospital. She attended Meredith College. Joyner is a reappointment to the board.

   •  Robert Gatling (Hertford County) - Gatling was born and raised in Hertford County. He is a direct in-line descendant of Richard Jordan Gatling of the "Gatling gun" fame. Gatling was instrumental in moving this commission through the legislative process.

   •  Jack Piland (Beaufort County) - Piland is retired from Abbott Laboratories. He attended N.C. State University and serves on the Bath Planning Board and the Beaufort County Hospital Board.

   •  Carol Lassiter (Hertford County) - Lassiter is the president of the Historic Murfreesboro Association. She is the former president of the Melrose Women's Club. Lassiter attended East Carolina University.

   •  Carole Farnham (Hertford County) - Farnham is an honorary volunteer at the Historic Murfreesboro Association. She has served as the administrator of the Lynnhaven House in Virginia Beach, Va.

   •  Bryan Buck (Gates County) - Buck is the owner of Buck Insurance Agency. He attended East Carolina University.

   •  Dan Phillips (Hertford County) - Phillips attended Chowan College and served for both the US Army National Guard and the North Carolina Department of Transportation. He is on the Murfreesboro Historic Association Civil War Living History Committee.

    The commission acquires, preserves and restores historic properties in Murfreesboro. Each member serves a five-year term.

    North Carolina Symphony Society Incorporated Board of Trustees

   •  Kevin Howell (Wake County) - Howell is the assistant to the chancellor for external affairs at N.C. State University. He attended N.C. State for his undergraduate degree and UNC-Chapel Hill for his J.D. degree. Howell is a reappointment to the board.

   •  Jerry Hwang (Wake County) - Hwang is the director of corporate development at Bandwidth.com. He attended UNC-Chapel Hill and has previously worked for the Mecklenburg County Alcoholic Beverage Control Board and Ally Financial Inc.

   •  Susie Farrell (Wake County) - Farrell is a creative director for freelance work in commercial and residential interior design. She serves on the Triangle Committee for the Thomas International Center. Farrell attended the Colorado Institute of Art.

    The board functions as the governing body of the NC Symphony Society Inc. and adopts bylaws for the society. The term length is four years.

    North Carolina Museum of Art Board of Trustees

   •  Stefanie Kahn (Wake County) - Kahn serves on the Friends Board at the Nasher Museum of Art, as well as serving two terms on the board of the Carolina Ballet. She attended Washington University in St. Louis and received her MBA from Columbia University, later working as director of marketing at American Express' consumer cards division.

   •  Samuel Hooker (Stokes County) - Hooker is the co-founder and chief development officer of Ridge Care Inc. He has worked in the senior health care industry since 1992. Hooker graduated from High Point University.

   •  Carl Venters (New Hanover County) - Venters is an independent broadcast media professional. He has worked for Voyager Communications and WRDU. Venters is a reappointment to the board. He attended UNC-Chapel Hill.

   •  Helen Nance (Stanly County) - Nance is the founder and chief administrative officer of Gray Stone Day. She attended UNC-Chapel Hill. She created the Educational Foundation campaign for the school to raise the down payment for a state-of-the-art facility.

    The board develops policy and establishes standards of operation for the museum. Each term is six years and there is a limit of two consecutive terms.

    African American Heritage Commission

    Altareit Miller (Alamance County) - Miller is the president of the Loving Fathers Society in Greensboro. He also owns a marketing group, Miller Marketing & Media Group and another company, Savior Onroad Services. Miller will hold an at-large seat on the board.

    The commission advises and assists the secretary of Cultural Resources in the preservation, interpretation and promotion of African American history, arts and culture. The term length is three years.
