Hood Richardson Slandered | Eastern North Carolina Now

Publishers note    re-published higher on timeline:    Now that the Beaufort County Jail is becoming an issue again, the Simple minds of Liberals and RINOs (no difference), who choose slander as a debating tool, will no doubt resume their dishonest tactics against Commissioner Hood Richardson, maybe others, since lies are so cheap upon their lips.

Since BCN believes strongly in the First Amendment, and deals in the purveyance of known truth, we will continue to stand for that imperative of truth, alone if necessary.

Publisher's note    when first published:    Far be it that BCN is the first or even last line of defense to correct the false accusations from anyone against any politician, even Hood Richardson; however, we tend to like to get the story straight whenever we can.

Irrespective of your political aptitude, absolute truth is an imperative tool to sustain the Republic. There is no substitute as we endeavor to govern ourselves.

Recently, I was sent a PDF of a Washington Daily News editorial, by William Buonanno of Chocowinity, detailing the certain ulterior motive by Commissioner Hood Richardson in regards to his campaign to keep the county jail in Beaufort County's county seat. From that WDN editorial, Mr. Buonanno conveyed that he had certain knowledge that it was Commissioner Richardson's unambiguous ambition to personally benefit from that campaign, and his prophetic words related in the WDN was to sound the alarm that Beaufort County had yet another disingenuous politician in our midst.

The ignoble editorial by William Buonanno in the WDN on 02/04/2014: Above.
Furthermore, in his ignoble editorial, Mr. Buonanno accused Commissioner Richardson of certain political malfeasance as his sole purpose for his efforts to persuade the commissioners to construct a proposed jail behind, and connected to the Beaufort County Court House, rather than 6 miles south of Washington, North Carolina. In his WDN editorial, Mr. Buonnano expressed that he knew well the political heart of Commissioner Richardson, and intuitively knew his sole purpose so well, that he was rightfully compelled to present this false narrative: "His suggestion (Commissioner Richardson) was to build it directly behind the courthouse and showed on his plans how the building he owns would have to be purchased and knocked down to make room for this new jail." (see the image below.) Buonnano's fantastic assertion simply never happened, and we present Hood's presentation, posted in BCN in early April, 2013 in words and video, to prove Mr. Buonanno's abject lack of veracity.

As presented above by the provided link, this pathetic argument, by Mr. Buonanno, regarding Commissioner Richardson's proposed self-enhancement is not only ludicrous, but simply not true. The supreme truth of the matter is that Commissioner Richardson did not suggest that any buildings be purchased by the county to be 'knocked down' for the space needed. He rather argued for a more practical and safe approach for housing and transporting prisoners. Also, this presentation of Commissioner Richardson's downtown jail plan did not occur about two years ago as specified by this Buonnano character in his editorial, but did occur at the April, 2013 Beaufort County Commissioner's general meeting; the footprint design of Hood's downtown jail plan, here below, was developed in March, 2013, which does not suggest that Commissioner Richardson's building be taken by the county for any proposed jail construction.
Hood's Downtown Jail presentation, developed in March, 2013: Above. As any reasonable and moderately intelligent person can ascertain, there is no suggestion in the 'universal language' of this drafted proposal that Commissioner Richardson had any designs to personally benefit from his campaign to keep the county jail downtown in Beaufort County's county seat.     Click the image to expand.

The unfortunate Buonanno false claim against Commissioner Richardson is emblematic of how so often honest people, even some politicians, can be openly, and personally slandered by those that are obviously not so honest, and reasonable folk must consider: Why?

I can only hypothesize that William Buonanno is willingly carrying the 'political water' for whatever group that needs the proposed county jail to be constructed 6 miles from the county seat, in the southwest corner of the Beaufort County, in the Chocowinity Industrial Park, just across Highway 17 from the proposed Welcome Center /Rest area. It makes no sense; however, one person's fool's errand is another's grand plan. Actually, on a deeper level, this Buonanno character's wildly ludicrous accusations against an honest county commissioner speaks more as to what lies deep in this accuser's heart rather than what lies deep within Commissioner Richardson's good character.

Similarly, more than a decade before, when Commissioner Hood Richardson and myself devised a proposed route for the Highway 17 bypass to pass east of Washington, NC; bridging the Pamlico River from the former Griffin's Beach, on the north side of the river, to Hill's Point on the south, I was likewise falsely accused of similar self-enhancement by former Republican-turned-Democrat county commissioner Mickey Cochran. Cochran, who was elected for his one term as a Republican but immediately carried all the 'political water' he could haul for the Democrats, disingenuously accused me of wanting the bypass east of Washington because I, Stan Deatherage, owned an interest in property in the Chocowinity Bay area. What the habitually fallacious Cochran failed to mention was that the land I owned was nearly 2 miles away from where the bypass would bisect Old Blounts Creek Road, which, as a poorly traveled county road, would have little chance of an off-ramp /interchange.

Unfortunately for Beaufort County, the Democrats wanted the Democrat controlled state government, of those times at the turn of the century, to build the bypass in Pitt County rather than Beaufort, and Mickey Cochran - even still as a registered Republican - was a good little Democrat soldier; Beaufort County be damned. In the end, the Democrat political need to build the Hwy. 17 bypass west of Washington, with Beaufort County more than 80% east of the county seat, was too great to overcome; however, Hood and I provided enough governing resistance to keep the bypass out of Pitt County; but alas, it is sincerely still, as Hood refers to it often: "A Road to Nowhere".

The point I am driving here is that there are these completely disingenuous individuals, such as Cochran and Buonanno, that have no place in any political /policy apparatus here Beaufort County, or North Carolina for that matter. These people, who would say and, or write just about anything, irrespective of its veracity, should be ferreted out for their deeds, and exposed for their ignoble ambitions. In these uncertain times, the entirety of our electorate would be better served to have more accurate, honest information rather than less. These infamous characters, who would make a habit of selling falsehoods as if the absolute truth was merely an arbitrary inconvenience, should be well known for their transgressions, and "We the People" should endeavor to do all we can to exclude them from any manner of public service.

The truth is a powerful instrument of good for the well being of our People. It should be preserved and protected to the benefit of all, and for the continuance of future generations of good Americans.
