Movie Reviews

Publisher's note: As redundant as a pacing lost soul, I am loathe to admit, Wyatt is probably our most read writer. Over a month ago, March 12, 2012, I was perusing our sister publication, Better Angels Now, and I noticed that so many of Wyatt's reviews, of the many fine films that occupy the public's interest, have not been availed to our readers through our Beaufort County Now publication.

Consequently, over the next many weeks, possibly months, we will endeavor to remedy this mild injus... (read more)

Music

I, like many others, mourned the passing of John Lennon in December, 1980, from the guided bullet of a misguided idiot. Not unlike those sad times, Levon Helm of the The Band, passed today, and like the musical promise of John Lennon, Levon Helm soulfully prepares to sing his heart out. unfulfilled, Levon will be missed for all he did accomplish. Levon Helm was my John Lennon - my American John Lennon.

Levon Helm was born the poor son of an Arkansas Cotton Farmer, Diamond Helm, who enriched h... (read more)
Publisher's note: Chapter VIII is the continuation of a series that began with The Turnage Theater in Images: a Retrospect in Melody - Chapter I, with the last installment in the series, The Turnage Theater in Images: a Retrospect in Melody - Chapter VII.

These chapters of the Turnage Theater, in retrospect, in these rare images offered below, are in chronological order, and if you do not see a show that you were particularly fond of; please, be aware of this one policy of mine - I did not pub... (read more)

Somebody's Laughing

Publisher's note: Some new and not so improved funny, or not so funny words from our friend Gene. One thing we can all be assured of - "somebody's laughing."

Balcony View
Bill and Marla decided that the only way to pull off a Sunday afternoon quickie with their ten-year-old son in the apartment was to send him out on the balcony nd tell him to report on all the neighborhood activities.

The boy began his commentary as his parents put their plan into operation. "There's a car being towed from ... (read more)
Publisher's note: Here we have a variety of Golf Stories, tales and cartoons that may tickle your fancy if you are an avid golfer, or to just remind you why you no longer play.

Eight Iron
Off the seventh tee, Joe sliced his shot deep into a wooded ravine.

He took his eight iron and clambered down the embankment in search of his lost ball.

After many long minutes of hacking at the underbrush, he spotted something glistening in the leaves.

As he drew nearer, he discovered that it was an e... (read more)

Visiting Writers

I worked on this with Professor Crispy (left), played by Charlie Ribbens, Robot Boy (right), played by Stanhope Deatheragesome friends I met when I was billeted in Savannah, while I was stationed at Tybee Island, USCG station. The producers of this film short were students at Savannah College of Art and Design.

My friends paid a close attention to details that effected the production values, and I will be forever impressed, as well as forever proud to be able to lend some assistance to their f... (read more)

Art as a Philosophy

"The Artist" wins Best Motion Picture of the Year

Tonight is Oscar Night. Many of you are watching some are not, but not to worry if you can't get that French production designer's name just right, we will, and we will report it, and all the other winners, just a soon as we can receive those valuable pieces of news of each Oscar winner.

Oh. And by the way, Billy Crystal's opening number was stunning. And he wasn't even stoned. See James Franco: One can host the Oscars without doing drugs... (read more)

Galleries and Exhibits

Publisher's note: Beaufort County Now, ever slow and steady, will begin the process to bring to you the winners' names of these works of art in this show. I took pictures of some of the work, but time was fleeting that night of the first exhibit, and I found no time the next day to take pictures of all the works of the winners, before I was called out of town.

If I am unable to make images of the other winners, and if you (artists) want to have your work exhibited for near perpetuity on Be... (read more)
Now an official downtown-Washington success, Lone Leaf Gallery & Custom Framing, celebrated its one-year anniversary yesterday evening with hors d’oeuvres, drinks and a new art exhibit, ‘Interruptions’ by Ben Isburg. From 5 to 8 p.m., dozens of loyal patrons and supporters stopped by the gallery to congratulate the Loughlins and see the show.

After a shaky, but well intentioned, version of 'Happy Birthday', Neil and Meredith Loughlin, owners of Lone Leaf Gallery & Custom... (read more)

Film Shorts

Publisher's note: As this region's most diverse "Informational Platform", we here, at BCN, accept all manner of contributions that are well presented. Few contributions; however, will be more diverse than that from a young aspiring filmmaker, whose "major influence" is David Lynch. Remember the film "Blue Velvet", filmed entirely in Wilmington and Lumberton, North Carolina, and the short lived TV series "Twin Peaks": Truly disturbed, but interesting stuff.

Beaufort County Native Dustin Dixon... (read more)
