The epicenter of the fight between the conservative grassroots and the Raleigh establishment is in The Outer Banks' House District 6. A July 17 GOP runoff features the top finisher, a Tea Party favorite, vs. the #2 finisher -- a former Democrat legislator backed by GOP power brokers in Raleigh. Local GOP officials are lining up behind frontrunner Mattie Lawson, while it appears Raleigh politicos like Richard Morgan allies Thom Tillis and Harold Brubaker are lining up behind former Democrat Arth... As North Carolina continues to struggle with one of the worst unemployment rates in the country, many families are finding ways to trim their household budget. But how many of you would think that adding an expensive cable channel that nobody watches would count as tightening your budget?

Representative Ray Rapp does.

Rapp (D-Haywood), along with Reps. Beck... (read more)

Beaufort County Commissioner Stan Deatherage endorses Mattie Lawson for NC House, District 6, and proud to do so.
Often, I am asked for my endorsement by other Republicans in primary's and almost just as often I decline. Understandably, I am uncomfortable taking sides - Republican candidate vs Republican candidate.

When Mattie Lawson, candidate for the Republican nomination for NC House, ran in the 1st primary, I took no sides in this race, although Jeremy Adams, also a candidate for that same... (read more)

Press Release:

Good afternoon,

This is Greg Dority writing, I hope this note finds you well. Following much prayer and consultation I decided not to call for a second primary in the GOP State Auditor race. Two factors played heavily into my decision.

First, is the overwhelming need to bring our party together and construct our best scenario for victory in November. Having been in, and won, a congressional run-off in the past I am fully aware of the strains put on a winning campaign in such a... (read more)

Our Founding Principles

Calvin Coolidge once said: "To live under the American Constitution is the greatest political privilege that was ever accorded to the human race."

On October 19, 1781, Lord Cornwallis surrendered to General George Washington at Yorktown to end the war for our Independence from Great Britain. The following year the Treaty of Paris was signed to officially end the war and recognize the existence of the United States. A new nation, conceived in Liberty, was born.

The next step was to figu... (read more)

"Our Founding Principles - The Beginning of the American 'Experiment' "

The first installment was a treatment of our English heritage before and after the American Revolution. In the second instal... (read more)
On June 16, 2011, the U.S. Supreme Court issued one of the best and most important decisions ever on the principle of federalism. In the case Bond v. United States (09-1227), the Court unanimously held that individuals, and not just the states, have standing to challenge federal laws as violations of state sovereignty under the Tenth Amendment. Justice Kennedy, often the "swing" judge on the Supreme Court, wrote the opinion. This decision hopefully shows that our high court is on the side of o... (read more)
Young adults often wonder what their rights are in the public school system with respect to religion. On the one hand there is the First Amendment right to religion itself (free exercise and the freedom from being forced to belong to a religion established by Congress), and then are a plurality of Supreme Court decisions which have interpreted the First Amendment, there are the views of religious groups and atheist groups, and then finally there are anti-religion "watch" groups which are ever vi... Any clear statement in these divided times will draw criticism or applause from an emotional populace. I think you deserve it straight from the President's mouth. It is not a matter of "what the Bible says" as much as it is about "what Jesus said and showed."

As one of his followers, I note he said NOTHING about homosexuality. It was clearly part of his society in his DAy as much as it is part of ours today. Jesus, instead, focused on treating neighbors in the same way we would like to be tr... (read more)
