On February 2, 2012 at approximately 10:40 p.m., Lt. Charles Rose of the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office was patrolling the Edward area of Beaufort County. Lt. Rose observed suspicious activity at a residence on Bonnerton Road that is known for drug related activity. Rose maintained stationary surveillance and observed a vehicle leaving the residence. Lt. Rose followed the vehicle and noted that the driver had exceeded the posted speed limit and was crossing the fog line of the roadway as it traveled South on Highway 306. Lt. Rose initiated a traffic stop of the vehicle near the Beaufort/Pamlico County line on Highway 306 South.

As Lt. Rose walked up the vehicle to talk with the driver, the vehicle sped off toward Grantsboro, NC. Rose pursued the vehicle and notified Communications of the incident. The Pamlico County Sheriff's Office was contacted to assist. The suspect traveled into Pamlico County at speeds in excess of 100 MPH. During the pursuit, Rose determined that the suspect was a white male driving a Nissan Pathfinder SUV. The driver turned off of Highway 306 near the 400 block and traveled down a gravel path. The driver rammed through a steel gate blocking the path and continued for approximately two miles before the driver lost control and the SUV became stuck in a ditch. The driver exited the SUV and ran into the woods. Lt. Rose chased the suspect on foot but lost sight of the offender. Rose returned to the SUV and located a wallet and identification inside. Rose relayed the additional information to Pamlico and Beaufort County Deputies responding to the area.

A short time later, Pamlico County Sheriff's Office received a call about a white male wearing only underwear running in the area of Highway 55. Pamlico County Deputies responded and arrested Marcus Andrew Gaskill, age 28, of Highway 55 East in New Bern, NC.

Gaskill told Deputies that his clothes were caught on briars as he ran through the woods. He was covered in small cuts and scrapes.

Gaskill was charged with Felony Flee to Elude Arrest, Driving While License Revoked, Speeding, and Resisting a Public Officer for his actions in Beaufort County. Gaskill was also wanted on outstanding Order for Arrests for Failure to Pay Child Support, Assault With a Deadly Weapon Inflicting Serious Injury, two counts of Failure to Appear in Court, Injury to Real Property, and Injury to Personal Property. His outstanding OFA’s dated back as far as 2008. Gaskill was held in the Beaufort County Detention Center on a $132,000.00 secured bond set by Magistrate David Curtis. The SUV was seized as part of the new “Run and You’re Done” law and may be forfeited when the case is adjudicated.
