Utilities Commission gives green light for Wind Farm, subject to some conditions

Publisher's Note: This article originally appeared in the Beaufort Observer.

The N. C. Utilities Commission is giving a green light for the construction of the Pantego Wind Energy project. In a copy of a proposed "Joint Order Granting Certificate and Accepting Registration Statement" release Tuesday, the proposed order provides a certificate for the project, subject to several conditions. Among those are: That Invenergy not use eminent domain to install the project, that the facility be constructed in compliance with relevant laws protecting birds and bats and that Invenergy submit a plan at least 45 days prior to erecting any turbines for complying with the permitting requirements of various state, federal and local regulations and permits. You can read that part of the order beginning on page 14 of the draft that can be downloaded by clicking here. Put in the vernacular, the Utilities Commission passed the buck on the environmental impact to other federal, state and local agencies. If Invenergy can get the permits, they can build the project, as far as the Utilities Commission is concerned.
