Everybody needs a Ferris Bueller day off - even Wikipedia. Unlike Ferris, who could make the most of any moment, the management of Wikipedia just has something to say, and it is a most narrow message. Like Ferris's best friend, the lonesome Cameron, Google is reluctantly going along for the ride.
Jimmy Wales, Wikipedia's founder and CEO, took the ever popular Wikipedia down for a 24 hour period to protest the proposed anti-piracy bill, currently under consideration, in the United States Congress. Google is taking a more reserved position of protest by using the redacting black mark of censorship over their logo, in that same 24 hour time frame, as their measure of protest. Regardless, this narrow message is making its narrow point.
That narrow point is that we must be vigilant over the possibility of censorship, which is the hallmark of fascism. Currently, we see this in what few Communist countries that remain, and in all of the Islamic Theocracies throughout the middle east and southern Asia.
If one were to visit Wikipedia, this day, January 18, 2012, this is what you would see.
Understandably, a People under the yoke of censorship is a People that can make terrible decisions in allowing that People to express their collective, and continually redefined, creative spirit that is the best of humanity. Think about this: How many real magnificent contributions have come to humanity from Muslims, under the yoke of an Islamic Theocracy, or from faithful Communists?
Like everyone else, we at BCN, hate the idea of anyone pirating our original content. On the other hand, we hate fascist censorship more. Is the anti-piracy law bad?
We don't rightly know; however, we, at BCN love clean water and air, but we fully recognize how the EPA is now run by environmental fascists, who cherish their idea of an environmental utopia over your reasonable right to enjoy your property.
We, at BCN, want fairness within the banking industry, but we easily see the Dodd / Frank legislation that has hamstrung the banking industry has, in part, also hamstrung the ability for the United States economy to shake off the Great Recession, which has devastated the real estate and construction industries.
Our point: Be careful not to give politicians, and, especially, the pathetic ones that are driven by the fickle whim of populism, excessive bureaucratic, regulatory control over your lives. Remember, or learn what real fascism really is - not the political epithets so easily thrown around by ignorant people - but actually what fascism is.
As a People, Americans must get smarter to actually know the difference; however, today, you will not be able to depend on Wikipedia. Like Ferris, they are taking the day off.
