Members of the East Carolina Health, Inc. Board of Directors have appointed eight people to the University Health Systems Beaufort Hospital Directors' Council.

The members of the Directors' Council include:
• Ed Booth - Booth grew up in the Acre Station community and lives in Washington, N.C., with his wife Eltha. He is employed with the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles in Greenville as an administrative hearing officer. Booth has served one term on the Washington City Council and is currently serving a second term as a Beaufort County Commissioner.
• Mitchell A. St Clair, Sr. - St. Clair is a native of Chocowinity, N.C. and currently resides in Washington with his wife Remanda. He is president of St. Clair Trucking, Inc., a company he founded in 1982. In 2007, he was the first minority person to be appointed to the N.C. Wildlife Commission, where he was recently reappointed for his third term. St. Clair currently serves as the chairman of the Beaufort County Community College Board of Trustees.
• Lindsey Crisp - Crisp is originally from Greenville, N.C. and currently lives in Washington with his wife Mary Beth. He graduated from East Carolina University with a degree in accounting. Crisp is currently serving as the president of Carver Machine Works. Prior to joining Carver, he was a senior manager with Dixon Hughes in Greenville.
• Ed Hamrick - Hamrick grew up in western North Carolina and currently lives in Chocowinity with his wife Dianne. He graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a bachelor's degree in business administration. Hamrick worked at National Spinning in Washington for 36 years. He has served on many boards, including United Way and Crime Stoppers and is the incoming chair of the Washington-Beaufort County Chamber of Commerce.
• Karen Krupa - Krupa currently lives in Chocowinity, N.C. She earned her bachelor's degree in nursing and master's degree in rehabilitation counseling from East Carolina University and master's degree in Public Health, Nursing from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Krupa spent the majority of her 36-year career teaching at the ECU College of Nursing. She is currently teaching part-time at the college and works with her husband, Robert Henkel, at the Inner Banks Artisans' Center in Washington.
• Dr. Jon Tingelstad - Dr. Tingelstad is a native of North Dakota and retired to Chocowinity in 2000 with his wife Marcia. He is a graduate of the University of North Dakota and Harvard Medical School. He served on the faculty at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University for 24 years. Dr. Tingelstad was professor and chairman of the department of pediatrics for 22 years. He currently serves on the Chocowinity Emergency Medical Services Board.
• Chris Toppin - Toppin was born in Washington, N.C., and currently lives there with his wife Tracey. He graduated from East Carolina University with a bachelor's degree in English. Toppin began working with PotashCorp in 1997 and currently serves as the manager of human resources. He has served as vice president of the Washington Girls Softball League and assistant district commissioner for Babe Ruth Softball for District 6.
• William "Bill" M. Zachman - Zachman was born and raised in Chicago, IL and currently lives in Bath, N.C., with his wife Katherine. He graduated from Northwestern University as an ensign in the U.S. Navy with a bachelor's degree in history. Zachman moved to Washington in 1972 where he practiced public accounting until 2008.
Booth and Crisp were nominated by the Beaufort County commissioners. The other six were nominated by the ECH board. Each member will hold office for three years and will be eligible to serve three consecutive terms. Because this is a new council, terms will be staggered.
"We are pleased to have an outstanding group of individuals to help guide our hospital," said Harvey Case, president, Beaufort Hospital. "I look forward to working with them as we continue to enhance our relationship with University Health Systems and provide quality health care to the people of Beaufort County."
The specific duties of the Directors' Council include, but are not limited to: the review and making of recommendations concerning medical staff credentialing decisions; the annual budget review; the review of quality issues; and serving in an advisory capacity to the president of the hospital by representing community priorities and issues.
The council will determine the frequency of meetings, as well as nominate a chair.
