Recordkeeping and Taxes for Small Business

This workshop is perfect for business owners who know their product or service very well, but are frustrated by accounting. Owners should not be working hard and running out of cash at the end of the month. This seminar will help participants understand the financial aspects of a business and associated taxes. Participants will become familiar with those financial terms that confuse them, but are the road map to their success. Topics will include: traits that make a business thrive and grow, CPAs and when and how do you use them, reading financial statements, required federal and state reports, and determining profit. The seminar takes place on Monday, June 13 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. and is free to attend.

CDL Truck Driving

Students will train to drive a Class A combination vehicle and prepare for the NC DMV commercial driver's license exam, including the pre-trip inspection, off-road skills test and the driving test. Truck drivers are in high demand. Funding assistance may be available through your local NCWorks Center. There are also scholarships available through State Employees Credit Union, Golden Leaf and the BCCC Foundation. This program is an online hybrid program, meaning that there will be online assignments apart from on-campus driving during the weekends. The course costs $226 and requires one textbook. It will run from July 11 through November 6.

Customer Service and Sales

In this four-week class, students will work toward earning their certification from the National Retail Federation Foundation. This certification is for individuals who wish to obtain a job or pursue a career in retail. The certification shows value towards customer service and sales skills and assist the job seeker in obtaining employment in the industry.

This program will show retail employers or employees how to learn about products or services, assess customer needs, educate customers, meet customer needs and provide ongoing support. At the completion of the class, students will be prepared for the certification exam. This class runs from July 12-August 2 on Tuesdays from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. and costs $95 and requires a textbook.

Getting More Business with Facebook Paid Ads

Since Facebook is showing less business pages it is time to learn the real power of Facebook ads. The site has over 1.49 billion monthly users, but less than three percent of customers may see a post. It is more useful to view Facebook as a powerful paid advertising platform than a free social media site. You can get started with Facebook ads with as little as a few dollars per ad.

The seminar will discuss how to create low-cost tests to find out which ad is more important and how to analyze Facebook insights. The course will provide information on creating and optimizing advertising on Facebook. A business's proper use of advertising on Facebook will allow for increased traffic to a business website, increased sales, and increased awareness of the brand.

Martin Brossman, a success coach, speaker, trainer and author, has been networking in the Triangle since 1982. He has originated numerous successful in-person and on-line networking groups. Brossman teaches crucial new Internet communications, such as blogging, podcasting and on-line networking. Brossman has offered training since 2006 to Small Business Centers and Chambers of Commerce throughout North Carolina. This class will take place on July 21 from 2:00-5:00 p.m. and is free to attend.

Leadership Series

Ed Ormsby will lead two seminars on July 26, one on business excellence and another on workplace ethics. Both are free and they run back-to-back.

Business excellence occurs when a business consistently executes effective and strategic steps that lead to goal achievement. A business's success is dependent on the leader understanding that to attain true excellence, they must include management, employees, customers, clients and supplier interests in this quest. This seminar is designed to show business owners how other firms successfully attain excellence in their organizations. This seminar will take place at 2:00 p.m.

Workplace ethics refer to choosing the options that are determined to be the moral or legal "right" choices, even if other alternatives are very attractive, and even if you can get away with less ethical choices. Organizations that support ethics initiatives consistently show more productivity and employee retention than organizations that consider company ethics merely an issue of compliance. This seminar explains the meaning of business ethics, the cost of abuse and ways for companies to avoid such breaches. It can also be formatted for employees and associates who need to understand their employer's position on this important issue and the possible consequences of abuse. This seminar takes place at 3:00 p.m.

Ed Ormsby has been providing counseling and consulting services to small business owners for over twenty years. In addition to over five years as the director of the Small Business Center at Edgecombe Community College, Ed has over twenty years' experience consulting and counseling small business owners in marketing and management. He has held virtually every sales, marketing and executive management position with Fortune 500, mid-sized and small businesses throughout the Southeast. He has been a small business developer and owner for over twenty years.
