      Sunday, May 1, 2016       Ticks, Chiggers and Mosquitos       2:00 pm

    Learn about everyone’s least favorite critters, how to avoid them, get rid of them and what diseases they can potentially carry. Meet at the visitor center.

      Saturday, May 7, 2016       Fitness Hike       10:00 am

    Grab your pedometer, fit bit, or phone app and put on your trail walking shoes to join a ranger for a brisk morning trail walk. We will walk up to 5 miles. Meet in the last parking lot. Bring water and wear bug spray.

      Saturday, May 14, 2016       Star Gazing and Constellations       8:30 pm

    Let’s celebrate National Astronomy Day by enjoying the beautiful night sky. We will spend the evening identifying constellations and discussing some of the stories behind them. Please meet at the park’s visitor center. After arriving the ranger will lead you to Flicker Field adjacent from the center. Remember to dress for the weather and feel free to bring a flashlight.

      Friday, May 20, 2016       Intro to Canoeing       10:00 am – 12:00 noon

    Come to Dinah’s Landing boat ramp and learn the basics of tandem canoeing on Goose Creek. Wear clothes that you do not mind getting wet, shoes that strap on and sunscreen. Space is limited, so registration is required. Please call the park at (252) 923-2191 to register.

      Sunday, May 22, 2016       Palmetto Boardwalk Hike       2:00 pm

    Take a one-mile walking tour of the boardwalk and view a freshwater swamp that is transitioning to a brackish water marsh all without getting your feet wet. Meet at the visitor center.

      Friday, May 27, 2016       Dutch Oven Cooking       5:00 pm

    Always be prepared in the event your power goes out. Come to the Campground Amphitheater and learn a new method of cooking outdoors with charcoal and a cast iron Dutch oven. The menu is TBD depending on how many participants can bring a Dutch oven. Space is limited, so registration is required. Please call the park at (252) 923-2191 to register. All ages are welcome.

      Saturday, May 28, 2016       “Hunger Games” Hike       10:00 am

    Meet at the visitor center for a fun-filled hiking experience. This program is great for small groups and family teams. There will be some friendly competition. Wear hiking shoes and bug spray.

      Sunday, May 29, 2016       “Hunger Games” Hike       10:00 am

    Tar, Pitch and Turpentine: Naval Stores in North Carolina See a live demonstration of the traditional tar-making process. Tar, pitch and turpentine were all derived from longleaf pines. For many years the naval stores industry was the biggest industry in North Carolina as the wooden ships of the day required these products. Meet at the Visitor Center.

The Rivers East Workforce Development Board has been awarded a National Dislocated Worker Grant (NDWTG) in the amount of $275,000 to assist the employees of the QVC Rocky Mount Distribution Center that reside in the Rivers East region.
It began as a light rain Thursday night, January 20th, with temperatures a balmy 46 degrees, and by morning a thin layer of ice clung to the firm, bright reddish green Nandina leaves prevalent upon my personal grounds here in Mac'swood.
The renovated and recently revived Turnage Theater has fallen on some pretty hard times as of late, and is being forced to shutter its doors.
I love watching, and taking pictures of small beautiful things just as much as I love making images of wide sweeping vistas. It is all part of God's natural plan, and I am fortunate to have the opportunity to record it for all posterity.
