Free Breast Cancer Screenings at Aurora Medical Center

For Immediate Release

(Washington, NC) - The Marion L. Shepard Cancer Center and Aurora Medical Center will offer free breast cancer screenings Tuesday, October 4th from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. The screening will be held at Aurora Medical Center located at 151 Third Street in Aurora. Dr. Jennie Crews and Dr. Jack Callahan will participate in the screenings. Free breast cancer awareness materials will be provided. The free screenings are available through the support of the Shepard Cancer Foundation.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month - the month dedicated to educating women about breast cancer by stressing the importance of early detection through regular self-breast exams and mammography.

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, other than skin cancer. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, exceeded only by lung cancer. The chance that breast cancer will be responsible for a woman's death is about 1 in 35 (about 3%). Death rates from breast cancer have been declining since about 1990, with larger decreases in women younger than 50. These decreases are believed to be the result of earlier detection through screening and increased awareness, as well as improved treatment.

The mission of the Shepard Cancer Foundation is to financially support and promote the Marion L Shepard Cancer Center in its efforts to improve the mind, body and spirit of cancer patients, survivors and caregivers.

To make an appointment for the screening, please call Aurora Medical Center at (252) 975-4308 ext. 132.
